"I have never been as starstruck as I was in that moment," Corden recalled during an appearance on 'Today with Hoda & Jenna'

James Corden is reflecting on his failed attempt to break the ice with the Breaking Bad alum Bryan Cranston.

During a Monday appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna, the former Late Late Show with James Corden host, 45, and the Academy Award nominee, 67, shared a few stories during a game of “Are James and Bryan Lyin."

As part of the game, Corden recalled the first time he and Cranston met in a Los Angeles restaurant, when Cranston apparently mistook him for a waiter.

"My story is very emotional for me right now. For my story is the first time I ever met Bryan Cranston, which was a huge moment in my life," Corden told co-hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb. "My wife and I — she was my girlfriend at the time — we’d gone to Los Angeles for the first time in our lives. And we spent the entire morning watching season 2 of Breaking Bad."

After watching the show with wife Julia Carey, Corden told Bush Hager, 42, and Kotb, 59, that the couple "then decide to leave our room and go for lunch."

"I go for lunch and who walks in the restaurant but Bryan Cranston. To this day, I have never been as starstruck as I was in that moment," he added.

While Corden may have been starstruck, Cranston was not. "Did you go up and say hello to him?" Hager asked.

"I went over, and I said 'Bryan,'" Corden recalled, to which Cranston interrupted, "And then I immediately said, 'Could I have some more coffee?'"

Corden ended the story — which he told the hosts was true — by explaining that he informed the fellow actor he was "an actor in the United Kingdom" himself.

"'I’ve been watching the show this morning, your performance is incredible,'" Corden recalled of his ice-breaker to Cranston. "And he said, 'Thank you, can I get a Diet Coke with no ice?'"

While Corden has recently been focused on his new Sirius XM interview series, This Life of Mine with James Corden, Cranston has been promoting his latest film, Argylle.

During the London premiere of the movie on Wednesday, Cranston caught up with PEOPLE about his 34-year marriage to wife Robin Dearden. The secret to their lengthy union, Cranston revealed, was to “marry the right person."

“I think there are five things that you should look for in a mate," Cranston said of his wife, who he wed in 1989. "Whatever those five things are to you, you need those five things. After that, let it go. We’re never going to be completely alike on everything.”

“Someone said, ‘You don’t go shopping with your wife?’ I go, ‘No! Why would I do that? I don’t like it!’ I just don’t like it and she doesn’t like things that I like to do either.”

Cranston also opened up about his decision to take a year off from acting in 2026, adding that he wants to "slow it down" at some point.

“I want to have more life experiences, I want to travel, I want to feel it," he said. "When you’re working, I’ve been working for the last 25 years nonstop and that’s not real life. And I really do feel like I want more real life experiences. I want to adjust the relationship that the industry has with me and also that it’s created for my marriage. I just want to kind of level that out and experience something new.”
