Bryan Adams Details Friendship with Amy Winehouse: 'I Tried to Help Her'

The 'Heaven' singer elaborated on his bond with the Grammy winner, who died at age 27 in 2011

Bryan Adams is opening up about his bond with Amy Winehouse.

The "Heaven" singer, 64, detailed his friendship with the late Grammy winner during a new discussion with The Sunday Times, as he revealed that he "tried to help" her amid her struggles with addiction. Winehouse died at age 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning in July 2011.

Adams reportedly flew the singer to his Point Lookout villa on the island of Mustique in 2007, per The Sunday Times. “I met Amy when I photographed her and we became friends," he told the outlet. "So I invited her to spend the holidays with my family."

"Sure, I tried to help her but, you know, it’s got to come from within," Adams added. "I really don’t know what happened with Amy and it is so sad because she was so, so talented and I so admired her individuality massively."

The singer concluded: "But did I make a difference? I don’t know.”

Back in October 2007 before the Winehouse's holiday visit to Adams' residence, PEOPLE shared a first look at his photoshoot with the "Back to Black" musician. He snapped Winehouse's photo for the Hear the World nonprofit at the time, in an effort to raise awareness for hearing impairment.

Following her tragic death, Adams later described Winehouse as "an enormous talent," during an appearance on The Andrew Marr Show in 2014.

"She wrote her own songs, she had a unique voice and she was a great personality," he said when describing an image he took of her.

"And I think she represents a type of person who exists here in London and her music will live on forever," he added. "She was an interesting character and she was very self determined."

Elsewhere during his conversation with The Sunday Times, Adams spoke about his close friendship with Princess Diana, who he described as "an amazing woman."

“We had a lot of really, really good conversations, I have to tell you. In fact it’s strange and surreal to think about,” he said. “I really, really liked Diana, she was an amazing woman and a super-great inspiration.”

“Meeting her was truly one of the greatest things that ever happened to me,” Adams added.

Adams revealed that he met the royal on an airplane after writing the song "Diana," which was believed to be about her 1981 marriage to then Prince Charles. At the time, Diana told him she'd "like to hear it again," so Adams "sent a copy to Kensington Palace, got an invitation to tea back and that’s how we became friends."

“When I first went round to [Kensington Palace] she wasn’t, like, ‘I really need to talk to somebody,’ and you don’t bulldoze into someone’s life wanting to know everything in the first 10 minutes," he said. "It was, ‘Let’s have a cup of tea.’ But later, the more friendly we got the more I learnt what was really going on.”

The rocker denied rumors that he and Diana were “once romantically involved” during a 2018 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, when he described their bond as that of “great friends.”
