Every year, movie fans wrestle it out on social media to try and decide if Die Hard is a Christmas film. The holiday hot topic has everyone heated about the action film starring Bruce Willis because it was released during the very un-Christmassy time of the year: July 22, 1988.

Well, someone in the inner Die-Hard circle has finally entered the chat and may have settled the debate once and for all. Bruce’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, shared what she and their two kids, Mabel, 11, and Evelyn, 9 were watching this year. Yep, you guessed it, Die Hard. She posted a clip from the movie on her Instagram Story showing her husband in his iconic white tank top as John McClane holding a gun. She set the video to Run D.M.C.’s “Christmas in Hollis” and added the text, “Us too” with the hands emoji making a heart.

The film takes place on Christmas Eve as Bruce’s New York City detective character gets involved in a terrorist plot to command an LA skyscraper. The movie’s director John McTiernan is on the pro-Christmas side of the debate, but he admitted that categorization happened accidentally. “We hadn’t intended it to be a Christmas movie, but the joy that came from it is what turned it into a Christmas movie,” he explained to the American Film Institute in 2020.

Bruce joked at his own Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis in 2018 that fans had it all wrong. I did this roast for one reason and for one reason only, to settle something once and for all,” he said. “Now, please listen very carefully: Die Hard is not a Christmas movie! It’s a goddamn Bruce Willis movie.”

We have a feeling fans can see it both ways now that the 68-year-old actor is retired from Hollywood: Die Hard is a Christmas movie starring one of the best action stars of his time, Bruce Willis.
