Bruce Springsteen’s mother, Adele, died on Wednesday at the age of 98, the singer announced in a touching Instagram post on Thursday afternoon.

“I remember in the morning mom hearing your alarm clock ring,” Springsteen wrote in a heartfelt caption under a video of the two of them dancing. The words are lyrics from his 1998 song “The Wish,” which was inspired by his mother.

“I’d lie in bed and listen to you getting ready for work, the sound of your makeup case on the sink. And the ladies at the office all lipstick, perfume and rustling skirts, how proud and happy you always looked walking home from work,” he added.

The 74-year-old rock icon did not provide any further details or cause of death, but wrote simply, “Adele Springsteen – May 4, 1925 – January 31, 2024.”

Adele was a fixture at many of Springsteen’s concerts through the years, and was even brought onstage occasionally to dance with her son.

In 2016, she and Springsteen wiggled their hips to his song “Ramrod” during a show at Madison Square Garden. In 2012, Adele danced and sang background for “Twist and Shout” at his concert at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.

During a 2021 performance of his one-man show, “Springsteen on Broadway,” Bruce revealed to the audience that his mother had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for the past 10 years. The Boss said at the time that despite her disease, “the need to dance hasn’t left her.”

“This is an essential part of mom’s spirit, it’s who she is,” he added. “It’s beyond language and it’s more powerful than memory. It’s the embodiment. This is what she has put her trust in and lived her life by and which, despite all she has suffered, she carries on with to this moment, as if life’s beauty never deserted her. I love her.”

E Street Band member Steven Van Zandt posted on X Thursday, calling Adele the “Matriarch of our family and an unrelenting source of inspiring positive energy. One of a kind. She will always be there for us. Dancing in the audience.”
