Bruce Springsteen has peptic ulcer disease symptoms, E Street Band postpones 8 shows

Bruce Springsteen is being treated for symptoms of peptic ulcer disease, and the rest of the E Street Band's shows in September have been postponed.

“Over here on E Street, we’re heartbroken to have to postpone these shows,” said Springsteen in a statement on social media posted the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 6. “First, apologies to our fabulous Philly fans who we missed a few weeks ago. We’ll be back to pick these shows up and then some. Thank you for your understanding and support. We’ve been having a blast at our US shows and we’re looking forward to more great times. We’ll be back soon. Love and God bless all, Bruce.”

Springsteen, 73, and the E Street Band had just concluded a three show run at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Sept. 3. The Boss is being treated for symptoms the disease and "the decision of his medical advisors is that he should postpone the remainder of his September shows."

Peptic ulcer disease is characterized by discontinuation in the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract because of gastric acid secretion or pepsin, according to the National Library of Medicine. Those with it suffer pain after meals in a span 15 minutes to two or three hours after eating.

The prognosis of peptic ulcer disease is “excellent after the underlying cause is successfully treated,” according to the NLM.

Fans were sending get well wishes to the Boss Wednesday night on social media.

“God bless you Bruce,” commented a fan on Springsteen's Instagram account. “Take care of yourself. We'll be waiting for ya! (heart emoji).”

“God Bless you Mr Springsteen! Get well!” commented another. “We’ll all be here when you’re better (heart emoji).”

Springsteen and the E Street Band postponed shows on Wednesday, Aug. 16 and Friday, Aug. 18, at Citizens Bank Ballpark due to the Boss "having been taken ill," according to Springsteen's social media handles. Those shows have been rescheduled for Aug. 21 and Aug. 23, 2024. Three other 2023 shows, March 9 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio; March 12 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut; and March 14 at the MVP Arena in Albany, were also postponed due to an undisclosed illness.

Springsteen, a Freehold native, and wife Patti Scialfa missed the inaugural American Music Honors event April 15 at the Pollak Theatre on the campus of Monmouth University in West Long Branch due to COVID-19, said Bob Santelli, head of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music, from the stage.

The band was scheduled next to play the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York, on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Springsteen and the E Street Band were in the middle of a North American stadium and arena tour that is scheduled to conclude Dec. 12 in San Francisco.
