Bruce Springsteen-Inspired Sundance Film ‘Blinded by the Light’ Given Release Date by Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. announced on Friday that “Blinded by the Light,” which the studio acquired out of Sundance, will hit theaters August 14, 2019.
The film, which was directed by Gurinder Chadha (“Bend it Like Beckham”), premiered during the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and received a lengthy standing ovation following its screening.
“Blinded by the Light” follows a 16-year-old British Pakistani boy in 1987 England whose life is changed when his friend loans him Bruce Springsteen cassettes.

Springsteen’s working-class anthems and affirming lyrics embolden him to find his own voice as a writer, stand up to the racism around him and challenge his father’s rigid ideals.
Chadha, Sarfraz Manzoor and Paul Mayeda Berges adapted the screenplay for “Blinded by the Light” from Manzoor’s memoir “Greetings From Bury Park.”
Chadha, best known for her 2002’s “Bend It Like Beckham,” also produced with Jane Barclay and Jamal Daniel. Executive producers include Tory Metzger, Renee Witt, Peter Touche, Stephen Spence, Hannah Leader, Tracy Nurse and Paul Mayeda Berges.
The film was one of the biggest acquisitions out of the festival. Warner Bros.’s New Line banner acquired the film in a $15 million-plus deal.
