‘Brown Girls’: Freeform Comedy Pilot Finds Its Leads In Punam Patel & Hina Abdullah

Freeform and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment have cast Punam Patel, who was a regular on their comedy series Kevin From Work, as a lead in the companies’ latest comedy collaboration, the pilot Brown Girls. Hina Abdullah (The Last Ship) is set as the other lead in the multi-camera comedy pilot written by Shilpi Roy and Nastaran Dibai.

Brown Girls centers on the relationship between Rimmi (Abdullah), an Indian-American aspiring beauty vlogger, and Devi (Patel), a young woman who recently has emigrated from India. Brought together by family, Rimmi and Devi instantly clash over their different views on modern life and love while slowly realizing they have something to learn from each another.

Abdullah’s Rimmi is a fashion-forward young woman who is trying hard to ignore her heritage and launch her own makeup vlog. Told by her mother that she needs to connect with family friend Devi, a traditional young woman who is new to L.A., Rimmi is put off by someone who seems to be her complete opposite. Devi, who is confident yet content with her traditional values, reaches out to Rimmi upon arriving in town and is not impressed with Rimmi’s quest for Internet fame.

Roy co-executive produces the pilot, which is executive produced by Dibai, Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor. The Big Bang Theory‘s Mark Cendrowski is directing.

Brown Girls joins three other Freeform pilots: single-camera comedy Alone Together, magazine drama Issues and mermaid thriller The Deep.

Punam is repped by APA and Principato Young Entertainment; Abdullah is with Abrams Artists and PYE.
