Braugher, who was best known for his roles on 'Homicide: Life on the Street' and 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' died on Monday

Andre Braugher’s cause of death has been revealed.

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine star died at age 61 on Monday. His rep confirmed at the time that the actor died after a recent illness, but now tells PEOPLE that Braugher's death was due to lung cancer.

It is unclear when Braugher was diagnosed with the illness.

The actor, known for his roles in acclaimed crime series such as Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, earned 11 Emmy nominations throughout his career.

He won two Emmys, the first in 1998 for his role as Det. Frank Pemberton in Homicide, and his second for his portrayal of Nick Atwater in Thief. He received four Emmy nominations for his role as Capt. Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Braugher began his acting career in 1989, starring alongside Denzel Washington in Glory and working with Telly Savalas on Kojak. His other credits include City of Angels, Salt, Law & Order, Salem's Lot, and the upcoming Netflix series The Residence. He also won Obie Awards for his performances in stage productions of Henry V and The Whipping Man.

Following news of Braugher’s death, his costars began paying tribute to his work.

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon,” his Brooklyn Nine-Nine costar Terry Crews began in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent,” Crews, 55, continued.

Viola Davis shared an Instagram tribute for her costar in ABC's second Live in Front of a Studio Audience special, writing, "Heartbreaking. You went way too soon. I loved every minute of working with you....your talent, your bottomless heart, your love of your family....your wife. You were a great man. God bless your children, your beautiful wife ..... You will be missed Andre 💔🕊️🙏🏿."

Shonda Rhimes, who produced his last project The Residence, shared a photo of Braugher on Instagram and wrote that she was "deeply saddened by the news" of his death.

"I mourn not only the loss of an extraordinary actor but, more profoundly, the departure of a warm and kind soul. His talent was undeniable, but it was his genuine kindness that truly set him apart. Rest well," Rhimes added.

A Chicago native and Stanford University and Juilliard graduate, Braugher is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, and their children John Wesley Braugher, Michael Braugher and Isaiah Braugher.
