Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Men of a Certain Age and Homicide: Life on the Street actor Andre Braugher has died at the age of 61.

Jennifer Allen, his representative, confirmed the news to People.com and Variety on Tuesday.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but Deadline.com reported that Braugher died Monday after battling a brief illness.

"Andre Braugher's name must be spoken when we talk about the great actors of television ... Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. #RestInPeace, sir..." actor J. August Richards wrote on X.

Screenwriter Mike Royce echoed the sentiment.

"This is impossible for me to process. He was [the] best actor in the world. An incredible human being. An incomprehensible loss," Royce said.

"Andre Braugher. Rest in peace. Loved watching him work. Anytime he entered a scene he commanded attention. Terrible loss and taken away from his family and friends way too soon," said actor Kirk Acevedo.

"Sad. I got to know Andre a little while doing the Brooklyn Nine-Nine pilot. He was a kind, thoughtful, supremely talented person," said filmmaker Chris Miller.

"The way he and Andy [Samberg]'s opposite approaches to acting baffled & then slowly influenced each other was a magical dynamic that was the heart of the show."

The Emmy winner's other credits include Glory, Kojak, The Mist, City of Angels, Frequency and Poseidon.

Braugher is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, and three children.
