Broncos staff ask for Baker Mayfield to be on their Senior Bowl team
The Denver Broncos sure appear to be doing their due diligence on the top quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL draft class.
Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage told ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM the team requested that former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield be on its squad for the game. The Broncos coaching staff is coaching one team while the Houston Texans’ staff is with the other team.

Having Mayfield on the team coached by the Broncos will, of course, let the coaching staff get a much closer look at him than they otherwise would if he played for the Texans’ team. The Senior Bowl’s practices and drills are far more meaningful than the game itself as NFL teams scout the players in attendance. It’s hard to judge players accurately in an all-star game with basic defenses being played.

The Broncos hold the No. 5 pick in the draft and have been looking for steady quarterback play ever since Peyton Manning’s retirement after the 2015 season. General manager John Elway was on the sidelines for the Potato Bowl in December to watch Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen play.
Allen, who declared for the draft after the game and will also be at the Senior Bowl, is considered one of the top QBs in the draft along with Mayfield, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, USC’s Sam Darnold and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson.
