It’s been less than a month since Broadchurch wrapped its second season on BBC America, and on Tuesday, May 12, the whodunit hits DVD.

While the eight episodes are the main attraction — and find Ellie (Olivia Colman) and Hardy (David Tennant) investigating the unsolved Sandbrook case while her husband, Joe (Matthew Gravelle), stands trial for the murder of 11-year-old Danny Latimer — the extras are a nice bonus. In addition to deleted scenes and “The Making of Broadchurch” and other behind-the-scenes featurettes, there are also interviews with the cast and crew.

In the exclusive sneak peek at the sit-down with Tennant and Colman above, the actors discuss what drew them to creator Chris Chibnall’s writing with an enthusiasm that makes it easy to see why they’ve already signed on for a third season of the drama. They also confirm that they were as surprised as fans were by how things unfolded during the trial. “It’s so intricate and tightly-woven that stuff that we never even thought about in the first series pops up and is really important now,” Colman says. Adds Tennant, “It comes back to bite some character on the arse long after it happened.”

Fans of the on-screen chemistry between the duo will see it in real life when they start questioning whether Chibnall planted those seeds in Season 1 intentionally or did some equally clever retro-engineering. (According to our premiere postmortem with executive producer Jane Featherstone, it’s the former.) There’s also some classic Tennant grinning and Colman facial expressions when they recall everyone’s reactions as the cast read the Season 2 premiere together. And finally, Colman praises Tennant for his thorough explanation for why Chibnall’s writing also makes it possible for the large ensemble cast — which expands to include Charlotte Rampling, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, James D'Arcy, and Eve Myles in key Season 2 roles — to all get along so well.

“All those characters are rich and fully realized, and they’re part of the texture of this community,” Tennant says in conclusion.

“You’re very eloquent, aren’t you?” Colman says.

“Thanks very much,” he answers.
