Was Brittany Murphy Murdered? Her Brother Believes So and Has Suspicions as to Why

On the ten-year anniversary mark of Brittany Murphy's death, her brother provided some controversial conspiracy theories as to how her death occurred, citing that he believes she was murdered.

The autopsy report indicated that she died of an overdose thanks to a wide assortment of prescription pills that were in her system at the time of her death, but there was other evidence of possibly nefarious activity that has been ignored. But what was that evidence and what makes this tragedy so mysterious?

Brittany Murphy and Her Husband's Mysterious Deaths

After Murphy collapsed in her Beverly Hills home, she was rushed to the hospital where she subsequently died. Ed Winter, the Los Angeles coroner attributed her death to a combination of pneumonia, anemia, and drug intoxication.

This in itself wasn't the mysterious part. What was perhaps even odd is that her husband, Simon Monjack, died only five months later in a similar manner. Winter believes that their lifestyles led to their ultimate demise, but her half-brother, Tony Bertolotti, isn't buying that explanation. He spoke to the Daily Mail to share his side of the story.

“I spent years looking at this, suppressing my own anger. I think Brittany was taken out. Who killed Brittany? She didn’t die of natural causes."

Bertolotti Suspects Foul Play

Bertolotti was quick to dismiss the rationale that drugs were the cause of his sister's death claiming, "I don’t believe the drugs line that much, I don’t buy it. I’m sure there was experimentation. But Brittany was conservative with that stuff, she was a bright girl." To him, foul play was at hand.

"Then there’s the fan club that something nasty happened to Brittany and I believe it with all my heart," Bertolotti continued. He believed that it was Murphy's husband, Simon Monjack, that led to her death, indirectly.

Monjack was a filed screenwriter who reportedly had over six figures in debt, even spending some time behind bars. But how would these factors contribute to Murphy's death?

Owing Money to the Wrong Types of People

Bertolotti believes that it was money-related and owing money to the wrong types of people, "I don’t know what business decisions they were making at that time, but [the deaths] sound business-related to me. I’ve heard all sorts of crap, so what is true."

To make matters even odder, Murphy's half-brother didn't even think that the two were truly married, citing the relationship was a situation that kept Monjack in the United States, legally.

"I heard that Monjack and Brittany was a marriage of circumstance as he was trying to stay in the States. Whenever I spoke to Brittany, she just brushed the Monjack thing off. She practically told us that it was that kind of situation. I believe they kept him in the States, he had a better chance of staying if they say he’s with Brittany."

Follow the Money

Bertolotti ascribes to the 'follow the money' mantra. "You have to go back to the money. Jimmy Hendrix died, but the money kept flowing for many, many years afterward. Sometimes an actress is worth more dead than alive," he said.

"You’ve got to look at who’s collecting the money now? I don’t know. Every time the movie comes on, someone is getting paid. Whoever’s got the money knows the truth."

Over the years, Bertolotti has tried to reach out to her 15 or 30 close friends to find out if they have any information on Murphy's death, but none of them will speak.

Sharing his frustration, he stated, "There was a group of at least 15 to 30 people around Brittany, and you tell me that no one knows nothing? Are you kidding? If I had the money to properly investigate her death, I’d go round all of them, but they wouldn’t speak to me."

Abormally High Heavy Metal Concentrations

Tony and Brittany's father, Angelo Bertolotti, exhausted every possible avenue to investigate his daughter's death up until the day he died. He even had her hair tested by an independent lab.

The lab came back with results that indicated higher than normal heavy metal concentrations, leading Angelo to believe that his daughter was poisoned. Unfortunately, this was not enough for the case to be reopened.

We may never know how Brittany Murphy actually died, but her brother's conspiracy theory is certainly something that will insight further speculation moving forward.
