Brittany Mahomes is supporting a cause with a special connection to her family of four.

Speaking with PEOPLE about her partnership with OWYN, the Kansas City Current co-owner, 28, talks about how food allergies impact her two children — Patrick "Bronze" Lavon Mahomes III, who celebrated his first birthday last month, and Sterling Skye, 2½.

"I can relate to all moms and families out there that are dealing with children with severe food allergies," Brittany tells PEOPLE. "The holiday season is extremely difficult when gatherings and activities revolve around food, and it is so special to be able to help these people and reassure them that they are not alone."

Brittany says that she and husband Patrick Mahomes always have to be "hyper-aware of what food and drinks we have in our household" because of her children's allergies.

"We recently found out my son Bronze has a severe peanut allergy, which led to a scary trip to the ER. It was one of the most terrifying days of my life," she says. "Fortunately, he was okay, but I’ve had to cope with this new way of living and ensure my family is safe inside the home and out."

Of her daughter, she adds, "We’ve been aware of Sterling’s allergies since she was an infant. We’ve been learning more along the major childhood milestones and are so grateful to continue to discover helpful resources along the way."

The mom of two and OWYN have committed to a six-figure joint matching donation to FARE, which is the nation’s leading nonprofit engaged in food allergy advocacy as well as the largest private funder of food allergy research.

"My hope for this donation is to inspire change within the food allergy community," Brittany says. "The ‘I Can' campaign will help the +85 million Americans impacted by food allergies and intolerances. Supporting and empowering this community will aid in FARE’s transformative work in research, education and advocacy to improve the quality of life for these Americans."

Brittany explains that the donations "will help fund innovative breakthroughs in food allergy research and treatments," as well as help all kinds of families by providing education "on how to live safely with food allergies and provide educational tools to schools and restaurants across the country to ensure that individuals with food allergies can enjoy mealtime worry-free."

The partnership has already been an eye-opener for Brittany, adding to her own research into the subject.

"We’ve certainly become more aware of what products we bring into the household. OWYN has been a huge help by providing my family with clean, delicious protein shakes that I know are safe to be around our kids," she says.

"I want Sterling and Bronze to grow up having a healthy relationship with food, and my goal as a mom is to ensure they feel safe and informed in case of emergency. We are learning so much."

With worries about food aside, the mom of two can help rally her kids as they root for their dad and the Kansas City Chiefs.

"It’s been such an exciting season," Brittany raves. "I’ve loved having Sterling and Bronze beside me to watch their dad do what he loves!"
