Britney Spears has a lot of love for her younger son Jayden James Federline.

The “Toxic” singer shares Jayden, 17, with ex-husband Kevin Federline, who is also the father of Spears' firstborn son, Sean Preston.

Jayden’s parents divorced in July 2007, and while he spends most of his time with his dad, Spears has been very involved in her son's life over the years. “Nothing makes me happier as a mom than watching these boys grow and smile and laugh!!" the proud mom wrote on Instagram in 2018. "They are my world and I love days like this when we get to just run around and play together.”

Like many parents, Spears has experienced her share of self-doubt while navigating parenthood. "As a mother, the one thing that always goes through your head is, You're never enough. You never can be enough — or do enough — for your kids. It's a never-ending issue for me,” she told Glamour in 2009.

In her new memoir, The Woman in Me, Spears revealed that she traded her “freedom” for access to her boys, agreeing to the restrictions of her 13-year conservatorship so she didn't lose time with her sons.

Though Spears once told PEOPLE that her "kids come first in my life, bottom line," her relationship with Jayden has been complicated at times. During an interview with the Daily Mail in September 2022, the 17-year-old said he's hopeful he and his mother can iron everything out while acknowledging it will take some “time and effort."

Jayden told the outlet that he wants her to know, “I love you a lot, I hope for the best for you. Maybe one day we can sit down like this and talk again."

Here’s everything to know about Britney Spears’ younger son Jayden and his relationship with the pop superstar.

Jayden was born in September 2006

Jayden was born in the early morning hours of Sept. 12, 2006, at 1:11 a.m., at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Spear's father Jamie confirmed that mom and baby were happy and healthy. “Everything is great,” he said.

Jayden joined his brother Sean Preston, who was born almost exactly a year earlier on Sept. 14, 2005. Though the brothers have always had a close bond, Spears enjoyed seeing how their different personalities blossomed as they got older.

While speaking to PEOPLE in 2015, the singer said that while Sean Preston was "very opinionated," her younger son tended to be a bit more shy.

"Jayden is sweet, very soft-spoken, kinda funny," she said of her younger son, adding, "He’s adorable — a mama’s boy."

In November 2006, just two months after welcoming Jayden, Spears filed for divorce from Federline. Speaking to PEOPLE about fatherhood, Federline explained that becoming parents early on in their marriage created a strain on their relationship.

"It's hard enough to be in a marriage, and then have a kid, then kids, it changes everything," he said. "For me, I'd become more concerned with my children. Not that I ignored Britney, but my kids are always most important."

Jayden’s parents have abided by several different custody arrangements over the years. And while Federline has been considered the primary guardian for the majority of that time, he told PEOPLE in 2008 that at the end of the day, he wants “my kids to have a mom and love her.”

Despite their ups and downs, Federline said he wishes nothing but the best for Spears. “That’s the mother of my children. Just because I’m not in love with her doesn’t mean that I don’t love her. I’m definitely rooting for her," he said.

Jayden is no stranger to life on the road. In 2009, he and his brother accompanied their mom on her Circus tour in honor of her sixth studio album. Spears shared a throwback photo of her and the kids poolside on Instagram in 2021, recalling in the caption how they spent her off days in between performances.

"I had my babies very young … at all the pools we went to on tours, all the babies flocked to me because I always brought the most toys 🧸🪁🪀,” she wrote, adding, “I really am a baby mamma 😜😜😜 !!!!"

Jayden also visited his mom during her Las Vegas residency, which ran from 2013 to 2017, and joined her again on her Piece of Me tour in 2018.

He currently resides in Hawaii

Jayden is reportedly completing his senior year of high school remotely after he and his brother moved to Hawaii with their dad and his family during the summer of 2023.

According to Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, Spears “consented” to the decision. "The boys are ready to get away from the L.A. microscope," he told PEOPLE.

However, the move wasn’t made without Spears' permission, a source told PEOPLE, adding that Federline consulted the pop star for her blessing first. "Britney has always faithfully supported her children and wants them to be happy," said the source.

Aside from Sean Preston, who graduated from high school in 2023, Jayden lives with Federline and his wife, Victoria Prince, as well as their two daughters, Jordan Kay and Peyton Marie.

He takes after his famous mom’s musical talents

Jayden shares his mom’s musical interests. The “Gimme More” singer gushed about her son’s instrument skills in a since-deleted March 2022 post on Instagram, where she referred to both her sons as “geniuses.”

“His gift scares me,” she said of Jayden’s musical talents. "[He] can play jazz and literally anything on the piano … We watched Green Book and he sat down and immediately started playing the blues."

Speaking to PEOPLE in April 2015, Spears admitted that she has reservations about her boys going into the entertainment industry, but would help in any way she can to help them live out their dreams. “If it’s something they want to do in the future, I would try to steer them away from it. But if they really had a true love for it, then I would help them, since it’s about what that little person wants for their life, you know?” she said.

While speaking to the Daily Mail, Jayden shared how his mom's career has inspired him. "There was this TV and it just showed all these people, and it showed her singing and dancing on the stage, and when I saw that I was like 'Wow, that is a lot of people,' " he recalled

"And I came to the realization of how famous she was and how successful she is as a person and that inspired me," he added.

He didn’t attend his mom’s wedding to Sam Asghari

Neither Jayden nor his older brother Sean Preston were in attendance at their mother’s wedding to Sam Asghari, who has since separated from the pop singer. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Jayden expressed why he and his brother decided it would be best not to go to their mother’s nuptials, which took place on June 9, 2022.

“At the time it just wasn’t a good time to go,” Jayden said, before clarifying that his choice wasn’t made out of ill intent.

"I'm really happy for them, but she didn't invite the whole family, and then if it was just going to be me and Preston, I just don't see how that situation would have ended on good terms,” he continued.

Kaplan confirmed the absence of Spears' children at her wedding in a statement to PEOPLE.

"They're happy for their mom and they are hopeful that Sam and Britney are starting a great future together," Federline's longtime attorney said. "It's their night and they didn't want to take away from them."

Jayden has publicly spoken about his mother’s conservatorship

During his interview with the Daily Mail, Jayden also discussed his mother’s 13-year conservatorship, as well as the current status of his relationship with her side of the family. While Jayden admitted that “the conservatorship went on too long,” he believes it was originally rooted in good faith.

"At first he was just trying to be like any father, letting [his] daughter pursue her dream of becoming a superstar, but I did think maybe the conservatorship went on too long,” Jayden said of his grandfather, Jamie Spears.

He also believes that Spears could have benefited from an extended break from the industry: “Probably why my mom was very angry about the whole situation that she was working for too long — I personally think she was. She should have taken a break and relaxed.”

But as far as his relationship with the extended Spears family goes, Jayden said he doesn’t think they're a “manipulative” bunch. Rather, they’ve taught him how to cope.

"They are not bad people. They know what we are going through now. They want our future to be what we want it to be," he said. "They just want to watch over us. Memaw and Uncle Bryan are a good part of our lives. They have taught me how to deal with things."

Jayden also said in the interview that although his mom's social media use remains an issue for him and Sean Preston — noting that they've asked her to refrain from posting photos of them — he believes their problems can be resolved.

"I 100 percent think this can be fixed,” he said of his relationship with Spears.

Spears said being a mom to her sons is a “dream come true”

Of all her successes, Spears cherishes her title as mom the most. “Starting a family was my dream come true,” she exclusively told PEOPLE while promoting her memoir, The Woman in Me.

"Being a mom was my dream come true,” she added.

And although she's faced hardships, Spears has learned to take motherhood "one day at a time," as she previously told Glamour.

The "Piece of Me" singer also discussed the importance of enjoying every moment with her sons.

"I notice that if there are some times I've been stressed, because I'm human and stress about things, that affects your kids. So you have to make sure you're a happy mom so they can be happy," she told the publication.

Spears also hopes that she’s taught her sons how to “respect other women.” She added, "Hopefully they will respect me by the way I carry myself, and in doing that, they will know how to respect other women.
