Bring that Ken-ergy! Free Movies on the Common Kicks off season with 'Barbie' in June

WORCESTER ― The Worcester Common Oval will soon transform into the ultimate outdoor movie theater, as free movie nights return this summer.

Between June and October, monthly family-friendly movies will be shown on a pop-up big screen on the Common in downtown Worcester. The annual event is presented by the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District, the City of Worcester and other sponsors.

A number of pre-movie activities will kick off at 6 p.m.; movie start times will vary depending on the date. Space will be limited and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs for seating.

The 2024 Movies on the Worcester Common Lineup

Thursday, June 20: "Barbie" (PG-13)

Bring that Ken-ergy! "Barbie" not only kicks off the movie season but also Pride. Ahead of the showing, there will be a drag performance by Diva D, along with music from DJ TMAN2.

Movie starts: 8:40 p.m.

Thursday, July 18: "Free Guy" (PG-13)

Filmed right here in Worcester, "Free Guy" stars Ryan Reynolds in an action-packed humorous flick. You won't want to miss the pre-movie activities including a "themed photo booth" giving attendees a free keepsake photo to take home.

Movie starts: 8:45 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 15: "Clue" (PG-13)

The 1980s cult classic "Clue" comes to the Common in August. The pre-movie activity will include a live interactive murder-mystery experience.

Movie starts: 8:05 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 19: "In the Heights" (PG-13)

In September, Hispanic Heritage Month hits the Common, bringing the musical "In the Heights" to the big screen. Ahead of the showing there will be free salsa lessons and a live performance from Raices Latin Dance.

Movie starts: 7:05 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 17: "Haunted Mansion" (PG-13)

Celebrate Halloween early with a showing of Disney's "Haunted Mansion," along with a talk on the history of the Worcester Common Burial Ground, as well as live ghost stories from Tim Weisberg, talk-show host on WBSM.

Movie starts: 7 p.m.
