Bride Cancels Her Wedding, Donates $15,000 Reception to Charity That Supports People with Special Needs

The would-be-bride donated everything — from a photo booth to fireworks — to non-profit Parents Helping Parents

A California woman had to cancel her wedding — but she didn’t let her reception go to waste!

Just two weeks before her wedding, which would have been on Saturday, the bride learned something about her fiancé that led her to call off their nuptials, NBC Bay Area reported.

With the ceremony canceled, there was just more worry — the nonrefundable $15,000 wedding reception.

The bride, who did not want the party to go to waste, decided that somebody should still get to experience it.

As a solution, she donated the celebration to Parents Helping Parents (PHP), a San Jose-based nonprofit that provides support to children and adults with special needs, as well as their families.

PHP, which had previously helped the bride’s family, was taken aback by the unusual donation, which its executive director Maria Daane called “extraordinary.”

“I've never heard of anyone ever calling a nonprofit and saying, 'We want to donate a $15,000 party in two weeks to you,’” Daane told NBC Bay Area.

“This just doesn't happen,” she said. “I don’t expect in my career to ever see this again.”

The nonprofit extended party invitations to the families it helps and by the time Saturday — which was held at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Gilroy — rolled around, 100 people had RSVPed, per NBC Bay Area.

Children, families, caretakers and PHP staff poured into the club's ballroom to enjoy the party, where they enjoyed music, food and other amenities donated by the bride.

In everything from formalwear to festive sweaters, the guests danced to the “Cha Cha Slide,” snapped pics in a photo booth and even enjoyed a fireworks display.

Daane said she was “just thrilled” to “have an event for families,” and one guest, Liz Schwartz, who attended with her daughter, echoed this sentiment to NBC Bay Area.

“It’s wonderful to be included and to have this celebration of who our community is,” Schwartz said.
