This bride was arrested for DUI on the way to her wedding

A photo of a bride getting arrested for DUI en route to her wedding is going viral.

On Monday, Sgt. Chriswell Scott of the Marana Police Department in Arizona tweeted an explanatory comment along with a photo of the bride, Amber Young, 32, of Tucson, wearing a long, white wedding dress as an officer escorted her into a waiting car.

“A driver was arrested for DUI this AM while driving to her wedding,” Scott tweeted. “@MaranaPD officers arrived at OG/Thornydale at approx 1030 reference a three vehicle collision. One person was transported with minor injuries. Don’t drive impaired, till death do we part doesn’t need any help.”

Naturally, his post brought a few comments.

“This morning at 10:30, we received a 911 call about a three-car collision on the corner of Orange Grove and Thornydale roads,” Scott tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “One of our officers noticed a female driver wearing a wedding dress exhibiting signs of impairment, so after doing a DUI investigation, they took her to the station and took blood.”

He added, “The woman told us she was on her way to her wedding.”

According to Arizona law, driving under the influence is defined as a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or more, and any percentage for people under the age of 21. First offenders may receive 10 days in jail, a fine of $1,250, community service, or enrollment in a drug/alcohol treatment program. Subsequent offenders may receive a 30-day jail sentence and a $2,500 fine, among other penalties.

Scott says Young signed a criminal complaint — a document with a promise to appear in court at a later date — and her fiancé picked her up from the police station. The results of Young’s blood test won’t be available from the state crime lab for two weeks.

Scott, who spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle on the way to a wedding himself, says the photo wasn’t meant to shame Young but rather to emphasize the perils of driving while intoxicated, saying, “One of the happiest days of her life could have had the potential to kill someone.”
