Turns out being a horrible father is a bad career move. R&B singer Brian McKnight found that out firsthand when an upcoming concert at Detroit’s MotorCity Casino Hotel was cancelled.

Although no official reason such as “scheduling conflicts” or “illness” was given for the change, Black folks online certainly seem to think his awful parenting is to blame.

The shame cycle began when the show was announced on Facebook and it was immediately met with harsh backlash from users who weren’t happy with his treatment of his older biological children. The “Back at One” singer recently called his four oldest children “evil” and a “product of sin.”

His comments caused outrage, with former fans questioning why he would publicly say such things about his children.

When news of the cancellation broke, Black Twitter had a field day roasting McKnight, using his most famous songs against him.

In the best reaction to this news, one user invoked the singer’s biggest hit, writing on X, “Welp. He’s gotta start back at one…”

“He’s having a concert in one of the blackest cities while being anti-black? He forgot who his audience was,” wrote one person reminding McKnight how he became famous in the first place. “New tour dates should be in white states only. Idaho. Maine. Massachusetts. Let’s see how far he get.”

Accompanied by the meme of Bugs Bunny saying “No,” another user referenced his hit, “Anytime,” posting on X, “Do I ever cross yo-”

Meanwhile someone spoke for the City of Detroit, writing on X,

“Brian McKnight…”I’m coming to Detroit.” Then answering the comment with a meme of a door being slammed in a visitor’s face.

Brian McKnight is finding out the hard way that you can only make so much of your personal family business public before people start taking sides. Only he knows why he insulted his children the way he did, but if he doesn’t care about his relationship with his older children, he definitely should care about his career—which may not recover from this scandal.
