Brian McCardie, Scottish “Rob Roy” Actor, Dead at 59

The actor died “suddenly at home” on April 28, his sister announced on social media

Scottish actor Brian McCardie, known for his roles in Rob Roy and Line of Duty, has died, his family announced on social media. He was 59.

The actor’s sister, Sarah McCardie, shared the news in an April 30 post on X (formerly Twitter), writing that he died “suddenly at home” on April 28.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie (59), beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many,” she wrote. “A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon.”

"We love him and will miss him greatly,” she continued. “Please remember Brian in your thoughts.”

Sarah also shared that Brian’s family is currently arranging his funeral, and requests privacy at this time.

United Agents, the talent agency that represented the actor, also confirmed his death on X, writing, “We are shocked and so deeply saddened by the tragic news of Brian McCardie’s sudden death. He was an actor of such great talent who we were lucky to represent, and our thoughts are very much with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Brian was best known for his role in the 1995 historical drama Rob Roy.

In Rob Roy, the actor played Alasdair McGregor, the younger brother of the titular hero (portrayed by Liam Neeson). The film also starred Tim Roth, Jessica Lange and Succession’s Brian Cox.

In addition to his memorable stint on the British television series Line of Duty — in which played crime boss turned informant Tommy Hunter for three episodes — the actor also gave stand-out performances in BBC series Time and James McAvoy-led crime-comedy Filth, an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel of the same name.

He also starred in another Welsh adaptation, drama series Crime, and shows like Outlander, Rebellion, and Fortitude.

Some of his film credits post-Rob Roy include Kidnapped, The Ghost and the Darkness, Speed 2: Cruise Control and made-for-TV movie Low Winter Sun.

More recently, he starred in Samuel L. Jackson’s latest film, Damaged, which was released in April 2024.
