Brent Faiyaz and Lupita Nyong’o Star in Fake Action Film in ‘WY@’ Video

After several teasers, Brent Faiyaz has dropped the video for his song “WY@” — featuring “Black Panther”/ “Star Wars”/ “12 Years a Slave” star Lupita Nyong’o.

Directed by Markpeaced, the clip features the two filming scenes from a (presumably fictional) action film, involved in a high-speed chase across the desert and apparently arguing. It also includes footage of the two of them on the set of the film — minus the dialog that was included in the teaser — and zooming in for a kiss before the camera pulls away; it also (rather unrealistically, considering most studio rules) includes Faiyaz smoking on the set.

It concludes with Faiyaz waking up next to a different woman in time to watch Nyong’o speaking about the film on a talk show.

The song is from Faiyaz’s “Larger Than Life” album, which was included in two Variety writers’ top 10s for 2023.

“Back in the mid-‘90s, the ‘Neo Soul’ movement spawned a group of brilliant and musically organic artists like D’Angelo, Maxwell, Erykah Badu and others who were fully contemporary while being deeply informed by the past,” Variety’s Jem Aswad wrote of the album. “Meet the best Neo-Neo Soul album to date, which brings that same concept into the present, with sexy grooves, soulful vocals and densely layered harmonies that recall peak Mary J. Blige, yet also has decades of hip-hop in its DNA (with both contemporary cosigning features from A$AP Rocky and Coco Jones as well as heritage ones from Missy Elliott and Timbaland). If D’Angelo and Mary’s music had a child, it would sound a lot like this.”
