In the midst of Brendan Fraser’s comeback — his 2022 movie, The Whale, received much critical acclaim — the Mummy star walked the red carpet with two of his three sons. In November 2022, Fraser attended the New York City screening of the Darren Aronofsky film — in which he portrays an obese English teacher attempting to connect with his estranged daughter (Sadie Sink) — with his two youngest sons, Holden, born in 2004, and Leland, born in 2006, whom he shares with ex-wife Afton Smith. While Fraser and Smith’s eldest son, Griffin, born in 2002, was not in attendance at the Manhattan screening, the George of the Jungle star opened up about how Griffin helped him connect with his character in the movie. "I have three kids of my own. My oldest son Griffin has special needs. He's autistic," Fraser said in conversation with Freddie Prinze, Jr., one day prior. “He just turned 20. He's a big kid. He's six foot five. He's got big hands and feet, a big body. I understand intimately what it is to be close to a person who lives with obesity.” The Now and Then star went on to praise his tight-knit family, a unit that includes his ex-wife. "Being with my kids and their mom and our family has given me such love that if ever I needed to hold something of value up to try and translate that to what was important to [my The Whale character] Charlie, I didn't have to look far," he told the She’s All That actor. Fraser and Smith did not always have such a harmonious relationship, however. The pair divorced in 2007, nine years after tying the knot in 1998. As part of their divorce settlement, the Encino Man actor was ordered to pay his ex $900,000 per year in alimony and child support. After petitioning the court to reduce his alimony costs — Fraser, who left the spotlight after alleging that he was sexually abused by Hollywood honcho Philip Berk, claimed he could no longer afford the $50,000 in alimony payments — Smith hit back with claims that the Bedazzled star was hiding some of his financial assets. His sons, meanwhile, have always had a close connection with each other. In a 2018 interview with GQ, Fraser revealed that Holden and Leland have always advocated for their older brother. “Ever since they were small, one was always the spokesperson and the other was the enforcer,” the SAG Award winner told the publication. Since the Indiana native’s triumphant return to the big screen, he has been spotted with a different woman on his arm: girlfriend Jeanne Moore.
