The Breeders sit down with Kyle Meredith to talk about the 30th anniversary of their now-classic album Last Splash. Over the course of 40 minutes, members Kim Deal, Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs, and Jim Macpherson recall the experiments that made Last Splash so special.

The band weaves through a number of stories, recalling an incident where they believed they had lost the original analog tapes before an industry friend helped them locate a secondary version. That tip would also unearth the previously unreleased “Go Man Go” and an alternate version of their hit single “Divine Hammer” that featured Dinosaur Jr’s J. Mascis on lead vocals.

“I didn’t like our version of ‘Divine Hammer’ or ‘Do You Love Me Now?'” reveals Kim. “I just thought they could have a nice, really big, thick, heavy guitar on them. It would make it sound cooler.” As they look back, the group also notes how the music culture at the time opened the door for their unlikely single “Cannonball” to be a worldwide hit; after the song’s release in 1993, “Cannonball” made its way up the Billboard Hot 100 and has become revered.

As for what’s next, the band tells us that Kim Deal has a solo album lined up, as well as tour dates with Belly, which of course opens the door for former member Tanya Donelley to join them on stage. In addition to their own headlining dates and a stop at Austin City Limits, the band will also be joining Olivia Rodrigo on her “GUTS World Tour,” including stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden and the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
