The basketball players first met while playing for a Russian professional women's basketball club. In 2021, within the span of a few months, the couple got engaged, married and welcomed their first child, daughter Ruby Mae Stewart Xargay.

“The best part of this year has been becoming a mother and growing a family with my incredible wife,” Marta penned on Instagram in August 2021, just a week after her daughter was born.

In October 2023, Breanna and Marta welcomed their second child: son Theo Josep Stewart Xargay.

Like her wife, Marta also played basketball. Marta started playing for the WNBA in February 2015 when she joined the Phoenix Mercury as a guard. She also played for Spain in the 2016 Olympics, where she and the Spanish women's basketball team took home the silver medal.

In 2021, Marta announced her retirement from the sport in a farewell statement in Spanish on Instagram, which she captioned, “Goodbye, but you will always be in my memories and I will always treasure the memories that I created with you 🏀🤍.”

Breanna and her wife met while playing together for the Russian women's basketball club Dynamo Kursk during the 2018-19 season, but they didn't talk much since both already had their own friends.

"She was in Russia way before me, I came later," Breanna told PEOPLE. "I was trying to figure out the team. ... But then, as it went on, I [started] building the relationship with all of my teammates."

She added, "And then having more of an interest in Marta, but still, you know, nervous to do anything."

In April 2019, Breanna ruptured her Achilles tendon, forcing her to fly home to the United States to recover. In a short YouTube film from TOGETHXR x Bleacher Report, Marta revealed that she and Breanna's relationship “started” the night the American-born basketball player got injured.

“I just remember like being in such a place where it was like, you know, something terrible happened, and then at the same time something amazing happened,” Breanna said in the film.

Breanna added that the recovery process and being long distance while Marta finished the season in Russia was instrumental in their relationship's growth.

"Me being injured was like a blessing in disguise," she said. "Those moments and memories were huge for kind of what helped blossom our relationship into what it is."

Breanna revealed on May 2, 2021, that she had popped the question to Marta. “Did a thing. Another ring. She said YES. 💍🥰 #wifey,” she wrote on Instagram alongside photos from the proposal.

Marta also shared pictures on her account, writing, “Life isn’t just about the moments, it’s about who we share them with! I said YES 💍 #wifey.”

The proposal took place on a hike in a desert in Phoenix, Arizona — which Marta initially didn't want to go on.

"I was complaining because she wanted to go hiking. You know Phoenix is super hot so I was just like, 'I don't want to be outside.' She planned the whole day, telling me let's go for a walk, do something, take pictures. I was like, 'Okay, let's do it,' " she told Arizona Republic days after the proposal.

The couple were married in an intimate ceremony on July 6, 2021. Footage from the ceremony was featured in Breanna and Marta's short film from TOGETHXR x Bleacher Report, which showed the brides dressed down in a flannel and jean jacket as they exchanged vows.

They had a few witnesses — including their friend and teammate Katie Lou Samuelson and her boyfriend — and kissed and cheered once they finished their vows.

Following their nuptials, the newlyweds told Brides that they were waiting to have their big wedding once the COVID-19 pandemic was over. "I just want the food to be amazing," Breanna said. "A donut wall, pizza station, and whatever else, all those things are coming."

"Ruby's arrival has been the best part of 2021 and easily one of the best moments of my life," Breanna told PEOPLE after her daughter’s birth. "Becoming a mom is bigger than anything else that I've done and I look forward to every beautiful and challenging moment as a family of three."

Ruby was born the day after Breanna won her second Olympic gold medal in Tokyo.

"It was a surreal moment," she told PEOPLE. "You don't see a lot of female athletes, or women's basketball players, being able to be at their highest and also be able to start a family, or have a baby."

A year later, Marta and Ruby showed up at Breanna's side as she and the rest of the U.S. Women's National Basketball team celebrated their fourth consecutive World Cup win in October 2022. Marta posted photos from the special moment on her Instagram, writing, "Congrats amor, no one deserves this more than you. We are so proud of you."

In 2020, Marta wrote that Breanna is “like nobody else in the world. When I’m with her, it’s like my soul is splitting in half. Part of me is on fire, going crazy if I’m not touching her. The other half is calm, peaceful and perfectly content knowing that she’s the one for me.”
