Breakfast to go: Scones, samosas, cinnamon rolls and more at drive-thru Jacksonville bakery

Tired of the same old fast food drive-thru breakfasts and burgers? Looking to spice up your breakfast and lunch options? Corner Farm Kitchen recently opened at 6661 Bowden Road — a successor to cherished neighborhood Liberty Bakery — near Parental Home Road.

Authentic Indian specialties such as vegetable samosas and naan with butter chicken from Corner Farm Kitchen founder, owner and cook owner Subhashini Golla share the menu with banana bread, cinnamon rolls, muffins and other breakfast favorites plus sandwiches.

All are made fresh daily in the renovated 500-square-foot former Skinner Dairy store that previously was home to family-owned Liberty Bakery until it closed last year after nine years.

Golla said Liberty Bakery's owners took her under their wing — sharing the recipes for some of the customer favorites at the drive-thru bakery and sandwich shop, which was among the first of its kind in Jacksonville.

On the menu at Corner Farm Kitchen

The menu at Corner Farm Kitchen may be small but it offers big flavors. Made fresh daily starting about 5 a.m., it's a mix of homemade breakfast and lunch classics plus authentic Indian specialties.

As popular as the pastries and other baked goods are, she said the Indian offerings top the menu.

"The butter chicken, samosas and chai tea are the highest-selling items right now. People want something different," Golla said.

  • Blueberry scone ($2.49): Fresh plump blueberries in a light, delicate pastry

  • Vegetable Samosa ($1.99): An Indian snack pastry filled with potato, green peas and green beans

  • Biscuit with an Omelet ($3.99): A buttery biscuit served with an omelet

  • Naan with Butter Chicken ($10.99): Creamy chicken curry with Indian oven-baked bread

  • Broccoli and cheese quiche ($4.99): Broccoli florets with sharp cheddar, eggs and onions in a vegetable crust

  • Triple Threat Cookie ($2.99): A big cookie filled with white, semi-sweet and dark chocolate chips that is served warm

Banana bread, cinnamon rolls and blueberry or apple cinnamon muffins are $2.49 each, while a bagel with cream cheese is $2.99. A chicken sandwich ($8.99 fried or grilled $9.99) topped with tomato, American or Pepper Jack Cheese, pickles and lettuce on a soft bun is a lunch favorite.

A hand-painted portrait of a smiling dairy cow on the side of the building marks its past as the former Skinner Dairy store. And the towering Liberty Bakery sign remains a beacon to passing motorists who might otherwise miss the smaller Corner Farm Kitchen signs as well as a reminder of the former neighborhood landmark.

Liberty Bakery closed Sept. 3, 2022, when its owners Bob and Carol Kernan retired. The couple ran the restaurant along with their daughters, Katie and Grace.

Golla, a software engineer and skilled home cook bought the restaurant in February 2023. Citing her Indian food, family and friends urged her to open a restaurant. As she was looking for a location, Liberty Bakery became available and she bought it.

"Bob and Carol became my friends after I bought it. They're like my parents, encouraging me a lot," said Golla, noting the Kernans came and trained her.

Corner Farm Kitchen is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday beginning Oct. 14. Saturdays will be a "family fun day" with a separate menu and there will be small benches outside for guests, she said.
