Breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert! These are the 10 best things we ate this month

Looking for something tasty to eat? We've got you.

We've eaten a lot of great things this month, from a beach town bakery's famous apple fritter to an overstuffed food truck torta. There were dishes from South Jersey, thanks to summer vacations, plus a few dishes we loved at a recent food truck festival.

Sound good? Dig in!

Apple fritter from Britton's Gourmet Bakery, Wildwood Crest

Do you ever dream about pastries?

You would if you'd had this fritter from Britton's, a family-owned bakery that's been selling sweets by the beach for several generations. Customers in the know get there early — there will be others on line even if you arrive at opening time, 6:30 a.m. — but the employees keep things moving and the sweets inside are worth the wait.

The bakery's cases hold donuts, crumb cake, coffee rolls (they call them Bizmarks), cinnamon buns, turnovers and muffins, but the apple fritters steal the show. Deep-fried until beautifully brown and filled with chopped apples, this treat has crunchy bits throughout, with a glaze that fills every cranny.

Cheeseburger with all the fixin's from The Lunch Wagon, Barnegat

If you couldn't tell from the picture, we are suckers for a messy cheeseburger.

This one comes from The Lunch Wagon, a popular local food truck serving everything from burgers and hot dogs to corned beef sandwiches and pulled pork grilled cheese. We asked for a cheeseburger with everything: lettuce, tomato, raw onion, pickles, mayo, ketchup and mustard.

The crunchy veggies balance the fatty beef and salty cheese, and all the flavors together — while messy — make for our ideal burger.

These grilled steak fajitas filled our bellies with mouthwatering meat, and hearty veggies like broccoli, zucchini and carrots. Traditionally, you don't see so much greenery on a fajita plate, but we appreciated the nutrient-boosted remix.

The rice and beans on the side were perfectly seasoned and comforting. Also be sure to order the Super Nacho, made from corn tortillas topped with refried beans, melted Monterey jack cheddar, guacamole, sour cream, olives, jalapenos, pico de gallo and a vegetable-cheese sauce.

I love charming coffee shops — who doesn't? — and A Little Cafe is a spot we enjoy walking to during our yearly beach vacation.

There are vegan and gluten-free options for folks who need them, but our favorite is the biscuit breakfast sandwich. Soft scrambled eggs, American cheese and crispy bacon are tucked into a buttery, flaky, fluffy biscuit, and you get a little of everything in each bite. Pair it with a hazelnut cold brew for the perfect breakfast.

This month's Latin Festival at Monmouth Park featured food trucks serving savory foods like tacos, empanadas, pernil and arepas, but we kicked things off with something sweet.

Vampire Penguin specializes in shaved "snow" ice, a fluffier version of shave ice, with toppings like a sundae. For the festival, they offered their sweet and spicy Mexican Candy, a treat inspired by the Mexican mangonada dessert of mango, chamoy and chili powder.

Vampire Penguin's dish was made with mango "snow" drizzled with caramel, chamoy and Tajin, plus juicy mango boba pearls. It was definitely different, but delicious.

Torta 7-0 from the Tortas Lokas food truck

If we see a torta on a menu, there's a very good chance we're ordering it.

There's just something irresistible about the expertly layered ingredients, all with different textures, packed inside soft bread. The ones we've had usually are filled with chicken cutlets, avocado, refried beans, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, cheese and mayo.

The Torta 7-0 from the Tortas Lokas truck added ham and bacon, and the sandwich was enormous. Even torta fans like us couldn't finish it.

As for the name, the sandwich is called the 7-0 after an infamous 2016 soccer game in which Mexico unexpectedly lost to Chile, 7-0. "Every Mexican remembers this loss," the truck's owners told us.

We don't know much about soccer, but we will definitely remember the sandwich.

A bowl of clam chowder seems like an easy thing to get right, but if you've ever had one that wasn't great, you know that's not true.

When done well — like at Harry's — the soup is velvety smooth, creamy and full of clams. We don't love big chunks of potatoes in our chowder, and this bowl had tender bite-sized pieces. It was so good, we didn't want to share.

We don't often order salads out, but when we do, we like them full of crunchy vegetables and topped with crispy, spicy chicken.

Such is Dogtooth's Buffalo Chop Chop salad, made from a bed of chopped iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, shredded carrots and red onions and topped with fried Buffalo chicken, bleu cheese crumbles and bleu cheese dressing.

We took a trip down to Cape May this month as a bon voyage to summer.

While there, we stopped at Harpoons on the Bay, a casual bay-front hub with amazing views, great food and refreshing drinks (try some of their frozen specialties).

Harpoons always features a fish of the day on the menu, paired with a starch and vegetable. This time, it was some of the freshest swordfish we've ever tasted. The fish was seared to perfection and topped with an onion and tomato-based sauce. The sides were asparagus and risotto.

As an appetizer, we had incredibly fresh oysters on the half shell, and we also enjoyed the Rum Runner and frozen piña colada cocktails.

Earlier this month, we visited Mochinut in Manalapan for a story on the mochi donut, boba and Korean-style hot dog shop.

As foodies who love sweets, we are happy to say their Mochinuts were some of the sweetest, chewiest and fluffiest donuts we've ever tasted. They are made with an airy base of rice flower and topped with whatever your heart desires.

Manalapan Mochinut: Where to get Korean donuts, hot dogs wrapped in Hot Cheetos

Our favorite was the matcha green tea donut, but we also loved the Fruit Loops donut, which we tried on top of a sundae.

Mochinut's coconut milk ice cream comes in melon, strawberry, buttercream and vanilla. The ice cream is dairy free but so creamy, you wouldn't know the difference.

Also try the Korean corn dogs and boba.
