The title of Beyoncé’s new album Renaissance keeps getting more appropriate: Following yesterday’s news that the LP became Bey’s seventh solo album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, its lead single “Break My Soul” has now ascended to No. 1 on the Hot 100 — becoming her first solo song to do so in 14 years.
Despite dropping a trio of massive albums — 4, Beyoncé, and Lemonade — and shattering the earth in the process, Queen Bey hasn’t topped the Hot 100 by herself since “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” in 2008. To put that into perspective, that was also the same year the first Twilight film hit theaters, Heath Ledger died, and Barack Obama was elected president — we hadn’t even began worrying about swine flu yet, much less COVID-19. But boosted by this week’s remix of the track that interpolates Madonna’s “Vogue,” “Break My Soul” has finally gotten the accolade it deserves.
Despite not having a solo No. 1 in over a decade, Beyoncé did as Beyoncé does, and she still found alternative routes to the top in the meantime: Her “Perfect Duet” with Ed Sheeran earned her a No. 1 hit in 2017, as did her remix of Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage.” Here at Consequence, we also named her Lemonade smash “Formation” the third best song of the decade.
But now with Renaissance, Beyoncé has also become first female artist to have her first seven solo albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Congratulations to the Queen!
Renaissance‘s release was not without some hiccups, however. Things got off to a rocky start when the album was leaked two days early in Europe. Then just days after its release, Beyoncé edited the lyrics to “Heated” after many pointed out a word in the song was often used as an ableist slur, and she also removed an interpolation of Kelis’ “Milkshake” from “Energy” after Kelis accused Beyoncé of failing to clear the sample.
