Brandi Carlile boycotts women's summit over former Trump DHS secretary Kirstjen Nielsen

Grammy award-winning singer Brandi Carlile is withdrawing from Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit over Kirstjen Nielsen's participation.

"The Joke" singer, 38, announced Monday that she won't lend her voice to an event that offers a platform to Nielsen, President Donald Trump's former Department of Homeland Security secretary.

"Respectfully, I absolutely cannot support Kirstjen Nielsen having a voice among the most powerful and inspiring women in America. Her access to power is righteously over," Carlile wrote on Twitter. "I forgive her. I mean no disrespect. I wish her well and hope that she comes to understand the error in her part of this shameful (family separation) policy."

Nielsen implemented the Trump administration's family separation policy after being appointed DHS secretary in December 2017. She resigned in April.

"I don’t think that human rights violators and merit-based abusers of displaced people should be given a platform to 'reimagine' history. Ever," Carlile added, describing the practice of separating immigrant parents and children as "one of the United States of America’s most merciless acts."

Despite boycotting the event, Carlile said she was "proud to have been invited to the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit" in Washington, which runs from Oct. 21-23.

Other scheduled speakers include actress Eva Longoria, fashion designer Tory Burch and congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, in addition to dozens of Fortune 500 businesswomen.
