Brad Pitt learned just how small of city Los Angeles actually is when he ran into his former father-in-law and brother-in-law, Angelina Jolie’s dad Jon Voight, and her brother, James Haven, at an art gallery opening. The 60-year-old actor was on a date with girlfriend Ines de Ramon when the uncomfortable encounter happened last Friday night in Beverly Hills.

The high-profile run-in happened at the Gagosian Gallery where Pitt’s Moneyball director, Bennett Miller, was exhibiting his work. An eyewitness for The Sun described the unexpected meeting as understandably “awkward.” They noted, “Plenty of people noticed how awkward it was that Brad was in the same room as Ange’s family, and it’s not a big space. I’m told James was amicable and acknowledged Brad, but I didn’t see them talking, they were mostly stood apart for the duration of the event speaking with friends.”

The insider went on to divulge that Pitt and Jolie’s family members became the hot topic of conversation instead of the artwork on the walls. While the Babylon star has fully moved on with is romance with de Ramon, he and Jolie are still battling it out over the ownership of their winery in France, Château Miraval. The 48-year-old actress sold her share to a Russian oligarch which Pitt claims was done without his consent, he wanted to buy his ex-wife out instead. This legal battle was just the icing on the cake to their contentious divorce and child custody fight.

The timing of Pitt’s run-in with Haven might be the most curious one of all, though. Jolie’s older brother recently broke his silence about the alleged domestic violence incident in 2016 that ended the Jolie-Pitt union. Pointing out that it “unfolded in the public eye,” Haven told the 90Who10 podcast that the traumatic event shaped his nieces and nephews’ lives: Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 18, Shiloh, 17, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 15. “That’s where it all started, it started with the protection of her and then of her children, my nieces and nephews,” he shared. “There are those are massively formative years; they’re becoming young adults in their early 20s.”

So, Pitt probably wasn’t a welcome sight for Haven or Voight — and The Fight Club star probably didn’t want to be around his brother-in-law, who revealed that he’s a father figure to Pitt’s six kids. “I think it’s just very natural [to feel protective] and I just want to be there. Very much like my mom [Marcheline Bertrand]. Anytime I’m blessed to be in their presence, I want to be in their presence,” Haven added. “I set my life up so I can be present with whatever the situation. I want to be there for them or for her — whatever she’s going through.”
