Luke Hemsworth has gotten out of one family business, and is eager to get back into another.
If Luke Hemsworth's last name sounds familiar, there's a good reason: he's the older brother of Chris Hemsworth and Liam Hemsworth. Chris has been making plenty of noise as the star of "Thor," "Snow White and the Huntsman," and "The Cabin In The Woods," and Liam is doing well for himself, having appeared in "The Hunger Games," "The Expendables 2," and "The Last Song" (the latter is where he met his fiancé, Miley Cyrus). But you might not know that Luke was a successful actor in their native Australia before either of his siblings got into show business, and after taking some time off from acting, he's decided to get back in the game and just landed the leading role in an upcoming feature film, "The Reckoning."
Born in 1981, Luke grew up in Melbourne, Australia, where his family ran a flooring business where all three brothers have worked. But Luke was bitten by the acting bug, and in 2001 he landed a role on the popular Aussie soap opera "Neighbours," playing a young football player who eventually turns to crime, selling performance enhancing drugs to his teammates.
Over the next eight years, Luke was a frequent presence on Australian television, appearing on such shows as "The Saddle Club," "Last Man Standing," "Blue Heelers" and "Tangle." But Luke became disenchanted with acting as a career, and in 2009 he dropped out of television to go back into the flooring business and look after his three children.
But with his kid brothers enjoying success in Hollywood, Luke decided to give acting another chance, and in 2012 he made a major comeback in Australia, starring on the mini-series "Bikie Wars: Brothers In Arms." (In case you were wondering, "bikie" is the Aussie equivalent of "biker," with Luke playing a tough guy on a motorcycle you would not want to cross.)
Now that Luke has re-established himself down under, he's been cast in his first starring role in a feature film. Luke will be co-starring in "The Reckoning" with another sibling of a well-known actor, Jonathan LaPaglia (his brother is Anthony LaPaglia). The film, written and directed by John V. Soto, concerns a pair of investigators looking into the disappearance of a handful of youngsters who accidentally captured a murder on video.
While it remains to be seen if Luke will enjoy the same level of success as Chris and Liam, at least he already friendly with a few A-list stars - in addition to bothers, he's gotten to know future sister-in-law Miley, and he's given her his seal of approval.
"She loves our kids, and our kids absolutely love her," Luke said. "She won our hearts. I find her really interesting. I find her very articulate, and years in maturity above her age. But at the same time, she's very much like Liam. I think a lot of people don't realize that they are really, really in love. They actually are a perfect match in a lot of ways."
