First of all, let's be clear about one thing: Leonardo DiCaprio sure as heck did not use a body double for his sex scenes in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
"It was all me, pal ... all the flopping around, everything, it was all me," the Oscar-nominated actor revealed to "Extra," adding that when you play a hedonistic and hard-partying character like stockbroker Jordan Belfort, you "have to go all-out. We can't pull any punches and you have to just swing for the fences, so hopefully people enjoy it."
Why did DiCaprio choose such a distinct description as "flopping around" when it comes to his participation in the sex scenes, particularly one involving a candle? You'll just have to wait and see when "The Wolf of Wall Street" opens on Dec. 25.
But believe it or not, DiCaprio's "swinging for the fences" is something of the exception to the practice in Hollywood. Body doubles are actually called upon fairly frequently, sometimes for scenes you wouldn't necessarily think would 'need' one.
—In a truly bizarre waste of money, Olivia Wilde had CG-generated nipples for her topless scene in "The Change-Up" (2011).
—Keira Knightley got topless (in the desert, at that) in "Domino" (2005), but her lap-dancing scene was actually provided by a body double.
—Emile Hirsch didn't actually run down the street naked in "The Girl Next Door" (2004), as he was underage at the time. He might actually run down the street naked when he plays John Belushi in an upcoming biopic, though.
—Jessica Alba's nude shower scene in "Machete" (2010) was achieved by digitally removing her underwear. She also used a body double for her nude scenes in "The Sleeping Dictionary" (2003).
—That's not really Angelina Jolie's (mostly always nude) body as Grendel's Mother in "Beowulf" (2007) — it actually belongs to swimsuit model Rachael Bernstein.
—Shelley Michelle gets some of the best body doubling gigs in the business. She has doubled for Madonna, Kim Basinger, Sandra Bullock ... and, perhaps most notably, Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" (1990).
—That shot of Natalie Portman's rear end that got Danny McBride all hot and bothered in "Your Highness" (2011)? That butt actually belongs to Irish model Caroline Davis.
—Natalie's "Black Swan" pal Mila Kunis also had a butt double in "Friends With Benefits" (2011), and those aren't her breasts that are flashed in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" (2008) ... though that is actually Jason Segel's you-know-what.
—That's not Freida Pinto's butt in "Immortals" (2011), either.
—Nor is that Owen Wilson's in "You, Me and Dupree" (2006).
—Geena Davis can't really claim that she got to get busy with Brad Pitt, as that was actually Julie Strain in the celebrated sex scene from "Thelma & Louise" (1991).
—Here's another actress who didn't actually get to romp around with Brad Pitt: The surreal sex scene with Helena Bonham Carter in "Fight Club" (1999) was completely computer-generated, 'cause David Fincher likes to spend money.
—And no way is that Kevin Costner frolicking about in a waterfall in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991). An A-list star could catch a cold that way!
