Geoffrey Rush Is the Voice of Some Ugly Alien in ‘Green Lantern’

"Green Lantern" is coming out on June 17, about two-and-a-half months from now. Filming commenced in January 2010, and wrapped in August 2010, with a few reshoots in January 2011. And yet, in news that strikes us as crazier than it probably is, they are still casting actors to voice some of the main alien characters. Is that weird? We think it's weird.

Last night, The Los Angeles Times reported that Geoffrey Rush has been cast as the voice of Tomar-Re, an ugly looking bird-like creature who teaches Ryan Reynolds how to use The Power Of The Lantern Ring Finger Device. (Name not trademarked; feel free to borrow!) Warner Bros. is announcing Rush's casting tomorrow, and /film says that Michael Clarke Duncan "may" voice another character. May? Aren't the number of shopping days until Christmas running a bit low? We are now fully expecting both characters to talk like old dubbed Kung Fu films. Entertainment Weekly confirmed Rush's addition this afternoon and pointed out that this is just an announcement, that Rush has already recorded all his voice work. We still hope it's like an old Kung Fu movie.

We're on record as to being more optimistic about this film than most, but we've got superhero fatigue as much as everybody else does. Warner Bros. is hoping to launch a DC franchise with "Green Lantern" that will lead to an eventual "Justice League" movie, with Batman and Superman and all sorts of those people. So this one better work. At least Rush won't have to worry about dubbing eff-words into ess-words, like in his last movie.
