Beyoncé’s high energy Super Bowl halftime set and reunion with Destiny’s Child have been upstaged by a hand gesture the Grammy Award winner flashed during her routine.

Since Sunday night, the Internet has been buzzing with accusations that the “Love On Top” singer was making a reference to the Illuminati when she formed her hands into the shape of a triangle while dancing.

Beyoncé’s husband, Jay-Z, has been making the hand sign to reference his Roc-Fella and Roc Nation labels since the 1990s. His fans and friends – Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna, etc. – have shown their allegiance by also making the gesture.

During the Super Bowl performance, “BEYONCE JUST THREW UP THE ILLUMINATI SIGN. RETWEET IF YOU SAW IT !” was posted on the Twitter page for a user named TheIlluminati. The update has been retweeted 7399 times.

While a spokesperson for Beyoncé did not immediately respond to Yahoo! Music’s request for comment, music mogul Russell Simmons has spoken out in Beyoncé defense.

“It’s not a secret society, it’s what we do,” Simmons wrote on his Global Grind site. “The status that comes with working hard and using your god-given talent is what leads to success.”

Simmons even took a sarcastic tone as he continued. “These ‘Illuminati’ members are focused and dedicated, and have been using their god-given talent since the moment they realized what was inside of them.”

Simmons even joked, “I know I'm doing well when I'm questioned about being in the Illuminati.”

But Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance isn’t the first time she’s been questioned about the imagery associated with her music.

VigilantCitizen.com, a site that tracks suspect Illuminati actions in the media, flagged Beyoncé’s “Sweet Dream” video for being loaded with hidden messages and dark visuals including a levitation scene.

Beyoncé has also been photographed wearing a ring that appeared to bare the head of Baphomet, a Satanic goat-like figure that has been associated with the Illuminati.

In 2010, Jay-Z dismissed claims that he was a part of the Illuminati or worshiped the devil during an interview on New York’s Hot 97 radio station.

“To be honest with you, I really think it’s really silly,” Jay-Z told Hot 97’s Angie Martinez. “For the record, of course, I believe in God, but I believe in one god. If people must know my religious beliefs. I believe in one god. I don’t believe in religion. I don’t believe in Christians or Muslims. I think all that separates people. I think its one god. I think it’s all the same god and I don’t believe in hell. But as far as God, of course, I believe in God.”

Jay-Z continued that he was not a part of a secret group. “That sounds stupid to me,” he said. “That’s ignorant to even say.”

Jay-Z said he wasn’t aware of secret societies. “I think there are cliques of friends who control things,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s a devil worshiping sect. I think that’s a little Tom Hanks. But I believe there are cliques of people who control the world.”

When asked if he intentionally used controversial imagery in his work (see his video "On To The Next One") to create a frenzy, he said, “I’m an entertainer at the end of the day but, if I want to push your buttons maybe I’ll push your buttons. But you don’t have to that these days. People make up their own things and run with it.”
