Coveted R&B group, Boyz II Men, has been tapped to add their sultry, silky sounds to the 25-year-old iconic Chilis jingle, “Baby Back Ribs.”

Once sung by N’Sync, the former quartet spoke with VIBE not only about putting their own flavor on the tune, but also about one of their own catchy lines. The trio, consisting of Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, and Shawn Stockman, named their 1991 hit “Motownphilly” for having the most memorable melody of their entire discography.

“Definitely the ‘Do-do-doom da-da’ you hear in ‘Motownphilly,'” Wanyá named. “One of the reasons we were excited to release our own version of the Chilis’ ‘Baby Back Ribs’ jingle is to give it that distinct ‘90s sound and the catchy ‘doo wop’ we are known for. An acapella song like ‘I Want My Baby Back’ is even more of a stamp on our legacy. We know it’s just as catchy as the original!”

Speaking to the power that R&B music gives to anything it’s attached to, Shawn continued, “It still has the power that it had years ago, we just feel it isn’t being used in the same way today. R&B is a genre of togetherness, at it’s core it comes from urban, Black people. It is centered around love, family, and structure. The power in that is astronomical but a lot of artists today aren’t harnessing that power.”

He went on, “R&B has always been built on the generations that came before, hence the need to know and understand your history. That link between the old and the new is missing today. We hope our new twist on the Chilis jingle will bridge a gap and remind people people of the good ol’ days.”

Although B2M has endless respect for their “Mount Rushmore of male groups” including “New Edition, The Temptations, Take 6, and Commissioned,” they’ve also birthed the next wave of young male R&B singers; the group WanMor. The quartet comprised of Wanyá’s sons includes Wanyá Morris II, III, IV and V, a.k.a Big Boy, 18, Chulo, 17, Tyvas, 16, and Rocco, 12.

“The boy group thing has definitely slowed down but there are groups out there like WanMor who are bringing back that quintessential sound,” Wanyá Sr. expressed. “That being said, social media has a lot to do with it because people are becoming famous by being individuals, rather than sharing fame with a group.”

He went on, “We live in a YouTube society — emphasis on the ‘You.’ The moment we were able to turn the camera on ourselves everything went singular. What’s missing is brotherhood. We were born and bred on music and brotherhood, the idea that nothing is greater than the whole. Our harmonies made us unselfish.”

“Nowadays, no one knows what they sound like together because they are so focused on how they sound individually,” he said.
