Boy, 8, Dies After 'High-Speed' Crash in Maine That His Dad and 5-Year-Old Brother Survived

An 8-year-old boy died following a crash in Maine that his father and younger brother survived.

The trio were traveling eastbound on U.S. Route 2 in Rumford on Saturday when the 2016 Subaru Impreza they were in “collided with a 2005 Volvo-80” going in the opposite direction, according to a statement from the Rumford Police Department.

A nurse and a Game Warden who were nearby when the “high-speed collision" occurred ran to the scene and “immediately began life-saving measures,” police said. The 8-year-old boy was “unresponsive” when they began to render aid.

The four victims, including the driver of the second car, were “quickly” transported to the hospital with what police described as “serious” and “potentially life-threatening injuries.” The 8-year-old boy, whom police have not identified, died from his injuries at the hospital.

Rumford Fire Chief Chris Reed told NBC affiliate WCSH it was a very “stressful” and “emotional” call, especially for one first responder, whose son was celebrating his 8th birthday that same day.

Deputy Chief Sam Cote credits the two bystanders for jumping in to help. “It was a tough day,” she added.

The boy’s father, identified by police as Matthew Kellogg, 42 of Hopedale, Massachusetts, was eventually transferred to a hospital in Lewiston, according to police. His 5-year-old son, who also survived the crash, was transferred to a Portland hospital “for further emergency treatment.”

As of Monday, both the dad and his younger son were in stable condition, despite their injuries, according to ABC affiliate WMTW.

Police suspect alcohol may be a contributing factor in the crash.

Rumford Police Chief Tony Milligan said authorities would not release further details "until a thorough investigation has been completed and a determination has been made,” according to NECN.

The condition of the Volvo driver is unclear.

Route 2 was temporarily shut down while authorities investigated the scene, according to police.
