Boy, 12, Dead and 5 Others Injured After ATV Carrying 4 Teens Collides with Pickup Truck in Texas
Authorities believe the ATV failed to stop at an intersection before colliding with the side of a truck carrying a man and woman in their 70s
A boy was killed and five others were injured Sunday in a crash involving an all-terrain vehicle and a pickup truck in Texas.
A teen was driving the ATV with three other kids onboard when they collided with a 2019 Ford Ranger near an intersection in Ellis County around 7 p.m. local time, Texas’ Department of Public Safety said, according to NBC affiliate KXAS-TV and ABC affiliate WFAA.
The ATV then slammed into the side of the truck, which was carrying a 70-year-old man and woman at the time, after seemingly failing to stop at the intersection, per the reports.
All of the ATV riders — one age 12, two age 14 and one age 16 — were ejected from the ATV when the vehicles collided, according to CBS affiliate KTVT. None of the ATV riders were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The 70-year-old driver and passenger of the Ranger were also hospitalized following the incident, according to The Dallas Morning News.

One of the four children did not survive his injuries. The victim has been identified as 12-year-old Wyatt Randle, according to KXAS-TV and KTVT.
The two 14-year-olds involved in the crash were taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas and Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, respectively, KXAS-TV reported. The 16-year-old was transported to Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Dallas.
One of the 14-year-olds, a boy, was in critical condition following the incident, according to WFAA. The other victims’ conditions are unknown.
Texas DPS did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

DPS Sergeant William Lockridge said the fatal crash has had an impact on the “rural” yet “tight-knit” area, according to KXAS-TV.
“This is our community, so the entire community is mourning the loss of life and it’s a tragic accident that could have been avoided," Lockridge said.
Three of the students — including the 12-year-old who died — attended Waxahachie Preparatory Academy, KXAS-TV reported. The fourth child attended Waxahachie ISD.
"As our community grieves, please keep these children and their families in your prayers.” Nathan Daves, head of school at Waxahachie Preparatory Academy, said in a statement.

The ATV involved in Sunday’s crash was not street legal, DPS troopers said, per WFAA. Lockridge said troopers are seeing this “very dangerous trend” across the state of Texas.
"While this is a tragedy, we want to take this as a teaching moment to let people know, these things are fun, they're a lot of fun, but they're not built to be on public roadways,” the sergeant explained.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, per the reports.
