Box office preview: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Revenant, The Forest

The biggest movie in domestic history is about to get a little bigger.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is headed for another weekend in first place after hitting $764 million yesterday to become the highest-grossing domestic movie of all time. The Force Awakens surpassed Avatar’s all-time record of $760.5 million after only 20 days of domestic release, and it should add another $50 million or so to its domestic total this weekend.

Still, it will face at least a little competition from Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, which is expanding after a two-week run in four theaters. Also opening is Jason Zada’s horror flick The Forest, which is hoping to crack the top five.

Here’s how this weekend’s box office race might play out:

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens — $50 million

Last weekend, The Force Awakens raked in $90.2 million, setting a new record for the biggest third weekend of all time. Now entering its fourth, it’s expected to fall about 45 percent to make another $50 million this weekend. If so, it’ll become the first movie ever to make more than $800 million domestically — after less than a month in theaters.

The Force Awakens will also make its last international opening on Saturday, debuting in China, the second-largest movie market in the world. Part of the reason The Force Awakens’ success has been so impressive is because it’s hit some pretty huge global milestones without a Chinese release. The Force Awakens may have only narrowly squeaked by Jurassic World’s $524.9 million global opening weekend record with $529 million, but nearly $100 million of Jurassic World’s opening total came from China alone.

The Force Awakens currently sits as the fourth-biggest movie of all time, with a global total of $1.58 billion.

2. The Revenant — $20 million

Iñárritu’s survival story opened Christmas Day in Los Angeles and New York, debuting in only four theaters and scoring the second-best average of 2015 ($118,640 per theater). In total, it’s pulled in more than $1.5 million, and this weekend, it’s expanding to 3,375 locations nationwide. The Revenant, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as real-life 19th-century fur trapper Hugh Glass, who was abandoned and left for dead, is up for four awards at this weekend’s Golden Globes. It’s expected to make its wide debut by bringing in about $20 million.

3. Daddy’s Home — $17.5 million

After consistently placing second opposite The Force Awakens, Daddy’s Home will now slip to third place. The PG-rated comedy, which stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, has racked up $99.8 million domestically since debuting on Christmas Day, and it’s facing a drop of about 40 percent for a third weekend around $17.5 million.

4. The Hateful Eight — $10 million

Quentin Tarantino’s Western also made its debut on Christmas Day, opening in 100 theaters for a strong debut of $4.6 million. It went wide last weekend, expanding to 2,474 theaters, and The Hateful Eight’s domestic total is now at $33.8 million. This weekend, it’ll add roughly 400 to 500 theaters for a third weekend somewhere around $10 million.

5. The Forest — $9 million

This weekend’s only truly new wide release is the horror flick The Forest, which stars Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer as a woman who travels to Japan’s notorious suicide forest to search for her missing sister. It’s the first horror movie to hit theaters since Krampus opened in early December, and The Forest, which is rated PG-13, is expected to debut in the high single digits.
