Box office: ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ passes $200 million globally in its second weekend at #1

After a terrific October, things settled down for the first weekend of November, as few major studios wanted to open the holiday movie season, and no new movies opened in more than 1,500 theaters. Read on for the weekend box office  report.

Some might remember that this weekend was when Warner Bros had planned to release “Dune Part II” until the decision was made a few months back to move it to 2024. So far, that move hasn’t benefitted anyone much, at least not in terms of box office.

After setting a number of records last weekend, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” took a massive plunge in its second weekend, probably not helped by the fact that it was already streaming on Peacock. Still, it was able to remain #1 with an estimated $19.4 million, down 76% from its opening weekend, to bring its North American total to $113.6 million. The PG-13 horror movie added another $35.6 million overseas for an international total of $103.5 million and two-week global total of $217.1 million.

In its fourth weekend, Taylor Swift‘s blockbuster concert movie, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” maintained second place with $13.5 million, a miniscule 13% drop, as those who’ve been waiting to see it made it their priority this weekend. It has grossed $166 million so far, domestically, with presumably just one more weekend in theaters. Taylor’s concert film added another $11.6 million overseas to bring its international total to $65.1 million and global total to $231.1 million.

Martin Scorsese‘s true crime drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” took third place with $7 million, a minimal drop of just 25% in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $52.3 million, offering more hope for the presumed Oscar movie’s legs after last week’s massive plunge.

Sofia Coppola‘s biodrama “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as Priscilla and Elvis Presley, expanded into 1,359 theaters on Friday following a one-week platform release in New York and L.A. in which it $230,000. It was able to bring in an estimated $5.1 million to take fourth place this weekend, with a per-theater average of $3,679 per location. Oddly, it was the widest release for a Coppola movie over her 23-year career, as 2017’s “The Beguiling” topped out at 941 theaters.

Mexican superstar Eugenio Derbez starred in Christopher Zalla‘s bordertown drama, “Radical,” which was released into 419 theaters by Lionsgate’s Pantelion division. It scored the best per-theater average in the top 10 by making as estimated $2.7 million in its opening weekend, or $6,516 per location.

After that, there were a number of movies in the $2 million range, including David Gordon Green‘s “The Exorcist: Believer,” which made $2.2 million (down 34%) in its fifth weekend, amassing $63.2 million for its North American run.

That was followed by the Angels Studios doc, “After Death,” with $2 million, dropping to seventh place (down 60%) with $9 million grossed so far, just edging out Paramount’s “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” which took eighth place with $62 million grossed domestically.

Meg Ryan‘s second movie as a director, the rom-com “What Happens Later,” co-starring David Duchovny, was released into 1,492 theaters by Bleecker Street, where it ended up towards the bottom of the top 10 in ninth place with an estimated $1.6 million or $1.056 per location.

Not doing nearly as well, Daisy Ridley and Ben Mendelsohn co-starred in the crime-thriller, “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” directed by Neil Burger (“Divergent”), which opened in 1,055 theaters but wasn’t able to get into the top 10. It ended up with $849,000 in 13th place.

Ahead of its wide release on Friday, Nov. 10, Alexander Payne‘s “The Holdovers” brought in $600,000 in 64 theaters ($9,375 average per location) for a total of $878,000 so far. NEON’s Cannes winner “Anatomy of a Fall” also brought in $600,000 this weekend but in 440 theaters to bring its own total to almost $2 million.

Most players had “Five Nights at Freddy’s” winning its second weekend in the box office prediction game, but players were mostly split between whether it would make more or less than $25 million in its second weekend – it ended up being quite a bit less. Exactly one player picked “None of These” for fifth place, so if “Radical” holds that place, and it should do, that’s only one player who might get a perfect score.

Dan C. was the only player to go 6 for 6 in the Oct. 27 box office game, knowing that “Five Nights at Freddy’s” would overperform, though he didn’t maximize his points as well as others did.

On Friday, Marvel Studios releases “The Marvels,” returning Brie Larson to the role of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, and you can learn more about that in Gold Derby’s weekend preview on Wednesday.
