Bow Wow Announces He’s Retiring from Music

Taking to Twitter yesterday, 29-year-old rapper Bow Wow announced he’s retiring from music. Bow Wow, real name Shad Moss, says of the announcement, “Retirement only means that it is time for a new adventure.” He explained further, “I always said years ago I’d retire from music before 30. I just can’t see myself at 30 years old rapping. Made over 20 million off rap. Why be greedy? I’m good with everything I accomplished. I made it to the white house.”
Bow Wow initially emerged as Lil’ Bow Wow back in the early 2000s, before transitioning to Bow Wow proper in 2003 with his third studio album, Unleashed. His last full-length release was New Jack City, Pt. II back in 2009, which was proceeded by his signing to Cash Money Records the following year. He was set to release an album via the label titled Underrated, but the album never surfaced. It was reportedly set to feature appearances by Nas, DMX, Birdman, DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, and Snoop Dogg among many others.
Bow Wow parted ways with Cash Money in May 2015, and signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Records later that year. It remains to be seen whether Underrated will ever see the light of day, but with him announcing that he’s choosing to focus on other ventures outside of music, it seems highly unlikely. What may see the light of day, however, is a “final album” produced by Snoop Dogg called Nylth. Taking to Instagram, Bow Wow announced, “My last album will be Executive Produced by my uncle Snoop and myself. Since he brought me in the game, it’s only right I involve him and end it with him.” Not quite a proper retirement, then.
His announcement is all a bit confusing and doesn’t entirely make sense, kind of like supporting role in the awful but incredibly entertaining film Tokyo Drift, but hey. In another Instagram post, he says that there will also be a movie titled Nylth, so there’s that, too. Here’s hoping his Tokyo Drift character, Twinkie, will be making his return to The Fast and the Furious franchise in light of this news.
