Be A Boundary Setter

Emily says her mother, Linda, has been financially and emotionally dependent on her for years. She says that Linda’s behaviors, which include stomping her feet, throwing things, and showing up at Emily’s work, can get “very scary.” “When you tell her ‘no,’ she can get very angry,” says Emily, who insists she has “nothing left to give” to her mother. “You can love your mother – you can even forgive your mother. But you don’t have to continue to be dragged down by her,” says Dr. Phil to Emily on Wednesday’s episode, ‘“My Mother The Ex-Madam,’” In “The Bubble Over My Head,” he tells viewers, “You may not be in this situation, but you have to ask yourself, ‘Are there boundaries that I need to establish in my life?’” Watch the video above to hear what he says about setting boundaries and giving ourselves permission to manage our own lives and relationships.
