Cameron’s family says he was a gifted athlete who became dependent on drugs after a career-ending injury. When he appeared on Dr. Phil in season 18, Cameron claimed the depression he felt from losing his identity as an athlete fueled his substance abuse. He says he began using heroin and later contracted an infection that required heart surgery to save his life. “I wanted to die, honestly,” says Cameron about that time in his life. “I was at the bottom of the barrel.” Today Cameron is two years sober. He says he stopped using drugs the day he met Dr. Phil.
