It seems that along with being fashion icons, even long after their deaths, and their love for being powerful working women, Carolyn Bessette and Jackie Kennedy had something else in common: they didn’t want John F. Kennedy Jr. to fly.

As many know, JFK Jr, Bessette, and her sister Lauren Bessette tragically passed away on July 16, 1999, in a plane crash off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, on a plane that JFK Jr was piloting. Two of the biggest women in his life, reportedly, continually tried to get him not to fly, but in 1998, he ended up doing so, and got his pilot’s license.

According to Christopher Andersen’s book The Good Son: JFK Jr. and the Mother He Loved, Jackie reportedly pleaded with JFK Jr to never take up flying out of fear of losing him as well to the Kennedy Curse.

Anderson said she’d tell JFK Jr: “Please don’t do it,” Jackie told her only son. There have been too many deaths in the family already.”

Along with that, per EOnline, Carolyn didn’t really want John to become a pilot when he decided to try the hobby a few years into their marriage. She reportedly “never flew with him without an instructor onboard”

Also one of Carolyn’s closest friends, and professional pilot Barry Stott, recounted that she had apprehensions about ever flying with JFK Jr, even weeks before their deaths, per YourTango. Stott claimed that Carolyn told him: “I’m secretly terrified of flying with John because he’s so easily distracted. He doesn’t seem to take it seriously enough.”
