Police called to 'acid attack' outside Borough Market two days after nearby London Bridge stabbings

Police were scrambled to a suspected acid attack outside Borough Market on Sunday just metres from the scene of the London Bridge terror attack two days earlier.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police said a person reported being sprayed in the face with a substance and enquiries were underway to determine whether it was acid.

The unnamed teenager was doused with the substance outside a Sainsbury’s on Borough High Street shortly after 3pm on Sunday.

Witnesses reported seeing scores of police cars and fire engines rushing to the incident as officers continued to sweep the London Bridge crime scene nearby.

Footage posted on social media showed emergency service personnel gathered outside the store.

The victim was doused with water and is not believed to have suffered any injuries.

MPS Southwark later tweeted: “Police approached at 15:37hrs near Borough High Street, by teenager who reported that he had been sprayed with a substance.

“LAS & LFB attended. Victim not believed to have suffered any injuries. Enquiries continue to determine what the substance is. No arrests at this stage.”

Road restrictions were initially put in place but have now been lifted following the incident.

Borough Market was also targeted by terrorists in the London Bridge attacks of 2017.

In recent years London has seen a surge of acid attacks. In January two men were rushed to hospital after being splashed with acid near Kings Cross.
