Borderlands movie will feature Marvel, Jumanji and Netflix stars
The award-winning game Borderlands is already known for its outrageous style and wacky plots. Now it's joining the ranks of other wildly popular video games to be adapted for the big screen.
From The Last of Us to Detective Pikachu, all manner of video games have been, or are in the process of, being turned into movies. While some are more successful than others, sometimes it's the unexpected one that proves to be a hit (we're looking at you, Sonic).
So what can we expect from the Borderlands movie adaptation? Read on to find out.
Borderlands cast: Who will star in the Borderlands adaptation?
Several A-list actors have already been cast in the upcoming movie. First on the list is bonafide movie star Cate Blanchett as the legendary thief and film's main protagonist, Lilith, who is one of only six 'sirens' who poses spectral and cosmic powers.
She is joined by comedian and actor Kevin Hart who will star as the super-soldier named Roland. Netflix's Haley Bennett also joined the cast, though her role has been kept under wraps. All we know so far is she will have a key link to Lilith.
Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis will play the archaeologist Tannis, who has a complicated history with Lilith. Marvel's Ariana Greenblatt will play the teenaged explosives expert Tiny Tina.
Creed and Shang-Chi's Florian Munteanu will play bandit Krieg and Jack Black will lend his voice to Claptrap, the overenthusiastic but sometimes sarcastic robot. Death Wish's Eli Roth is attached to direct, with Emmy-winning Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin having written the latest draft of the screenplay.
Roth has been vocal about his excitement to work with the cast. Borderlands sees him reunite with Blanchett, about whom he said: "We had the most incredible collaboration together on The House with a Clock in Its Walls, and I believe there's nothing she can't do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing.
"Working with her is truly a director's dream come true, and I feel so fortunate that I get to do it again on an even bigger scale."
Borderlands plot: What will Borderlands be about?
So far the plot has been kept under wraps. If it sticks to the setting of the game, at the very least, we do know that it will take place in the future on the abandoned planet of Pandora, where people are in search of a mythical alien vault, in which resides a mysterious relic.
The game is a role-playing first-person shooter game, that launched in 2009. Its third instalment, Borderlands 3, was released in September 2019, seven years after the franchise's previous title.
We can certainly anticipate huge levels of action and glorious set and costume pieces, hopefully on the level of Mad Max: Fury Road. With Mazin on board, at least we'll be certain to get some well-written dialogue.
Borderlands release date: When will Borderlands be out in cinemas?
As casting announcements are still coming out, it will likely be a long time before we get a release date. If everything goes smoothly it could be out sometime in 2022, but that's pure speculation on our part.

Again, this is a long way off! For now, if you want your Borderlands fix, you'll just have to play the games.
Borderlands should arrive in cinemas next year sometime.
