Boosie Badazz says he walked out of a theater while viewing The Color Purple after discovering the movie contained a depiction of a lesbian relationship.

The 41-year-old rapper shared his experience in a post on social media, seemingly condemning the inclusion of scenes displaying and implicating sexual intimacy between characters Celie (Fantasia Barrino) and Shug Avery (Taraji P. Henson) as part of the film’s plot.

“HAD TO WALK OUT,” Boosie wrote on X while expressing his thoughts on The Color Purple. He also noted that two other elderly couples walked out of the theater in apparent disapproval, and that he had his daughters accompanying him at the time.

“SEEMED LIKE A [rainbow emoji] LOVE STORY.” The Baton Rouge native continued, admitting that while he was offended by the “narrative” of its script, the performance of the cast was impressive.

“GOOD ACTING BUT WHOEVER WROTE THE SCRIPT IS PUSHING THE NARRATIVE HARD. AS A PARENT I WILL NOT LET MY LITTLE GIRL WATCH THIS FILM,” Boosie concluded.

The “Wipe Me Down” rapper’s post garnered mixed reactions, with many pointing out that this version of The Color Purple was adapted from the Broadway musical, and that its plot is similar to that of the original The Color Purple film released in 1985.

The Color Purple was released on Dec. 25 and had the second-highest domestic opening for a film on Christmas Day of all-time at $18 million, falling short of Sherlock Holmes’ record $24.6 million in 2009. It debuted at No. 1 at the box office, beating out Ferrari and The Boys in the Boat.
