Boosie Badazz says that Suge Knight once attempted to recruit him as the “next 2Pac” of Death Row, but that he opted to continue his career as an independent artist.

During a recent interview with DJ Vlad, Boosie recalled meeting with the incarcerated rap mogul in his hometown of Baton Rouge, La. during the late ’00s. The 41-year-old claims that Knight was under the belief he could create an energy and buzz similar to that of Shakur, who helped confirm Death Row’s reign as the dominant rap label of the mid ’90s.

“Before I had went to prison, Suge came down there to Baton Rouge,” Boosie told Vlad, remembering the encounter. “He was talking about signing me,” he added. “People was telling him I was his next 2Pac.”

According to Boosie, he and Knight met at a local shopping mall in Baton Rouge to discuss terms, during which the Death Row founder puffed on a cigar while walking throughout building, instilling fear in the security guards.

When asked if Knight’s notorious reputation made him feel uncomfortable during the meeting, Boosie says he felt no such reservations given his own street credibility, as well as being in his hometown. “When you’re like that, you don’t worry about that,” the “Wipe Me Down” rapper said of his lack of apprehension about being in close quarters with Knight. “We just chopped it up for a minute.”

While Boosie said he was asked to consider joining Knight and Death Row, he ultimately passed up on the offer. “At that time, I wasn’t even really talking to Trill [Entertainment] like that. I was trying to focus on my own label,” he said.

“That’s when I started putting out my own mixtapes and I had broke away from ’em. I ain’t wanna have no boss no more, I was at a point where I wanted to be the boss. I wanted to call my own shots.”

However, he says he has no regrets about the missed opportunity, as it would have put him in position to assume Knight’s enemies as his own due to his loyal nature. “Everything happen for a reason. When I’m down with you, I’m down with you,” Boosie explained. “I’d have been beefing with everybody Suge would have been beefing with.”
