If you're planning to fly to California for the holidays, you can find some of the best deals right now.
But you'll have to act fast to book the lowest rates.
Southwest Airlines' latest fare sale is offering 40% off base fares on flights to 12 California cities from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. But the deal is valid for two days only: Aug. 9-10.
The sale includes lower priced flights for some destinations during the Labor Day, Thanksgiving and December holiday travel periods.

These California destinations are included in Southwest's latest fare sale.
Los Angeles/Burbank: Most of Southwest's nonstop flights to Los Angeles International Airport and Hollywood Burbank Airport start at $48 during the sale. The cheapest flights are on Labor Day weekend; one-way flights on Sept. 3 and 4 start at $39. Flights are affordable for the December holidays too, starting at $69 in Christmas week.
Fresno: Southwest offers flights to this San Joaquin Valley city about 62 miles from Yosemite National Park, with layovers in Las Vegas or Denver. One of the lowest priced flights is a Sept. 4-6 trip that comes out to $148.15 round trip including taxes.
Long Beach: One-way sale fares generally start at $48. One-way flights around Thanksgiving start at $69.
Air or land: California cruises are back — should you fly or drive to get there?
Oakland: The lowest fares to this Bay Area city depend on when you plan on traveling. Most flights from late August to early November range from $48 to $60 one way, increasing to $70-$81 from December to late February. Expect to pay more than $100 each way for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's flights.
Ontario: Southwest offers nonstops from Sky Harbor to this city east of Los Angeles. Most flights in September, October, December, January and the first half of February start at $72 one way. The best fares for flights in November are just before Thanksgiving, starting at $54 one way.
Palm Springs: This Sonoran Desert city is about 50 miles from Joshua Tree National Park. Most one-way flights start around $63 for fall travel and $75 for winter travel. Prices are lower for Labor Day weekend — $48 on Sept. 3 and $39 on Sept. 4.
Sacramento: Depending on when you go, flights to California's capital city range from $60 to $91 one way for the lowest rates. Flights during holiday periods are $119-$141.
San Diego: The best fares are from late August to early November, $48-$54 one way. Expect to pay more during the holidays and the winter months: The lowest-priced winter nonstops are $98 one way.

San Francisco: Like nearby Oakland, the best fares depend on when you're traveling. Most nonstops are $48-$54 each way until November. Flights from December to February are $66-$75 one way. Flights just before Thanksgiving and Christmas start at $99.
San Jose: One-way flights to the Silicon Valley city start around $66 in the fall months and $91 in the winter months. While flights are higher for the holidays, one of the best deals is for a Nov. 22-29 trip in the Thanksgiving travel period, which comes out to $197.95 roundtrip including taxes.
Santa Barbara: Southwest offers flights from Sky Harbor to Santa Barbara, though none are nonstops. Most flights are $90-$95 one-way, and higher for the Thanksgiving and December holidays.
