Another Austin barbecue operation is in the national news. No surprise there, given the surplus of exceptional offerings of smoked meat in town. The surprise comes from the fact that the barbecue joint, KG BBQ, didn't make headlines for its meat but for its dessert.

Bon Appetit staff, as part of the publication's best new restaurants edition (which includes Austin Mexican seafood restaurant Este), declare that the cardamom pistachio rice pudding from Kareem El-Ghayesh's Egyptian-influenced barbecue trailer at Oddwood Brewing was one of the best desserts they ate at new restaurants in the country this year.

Restaurant editor Elazar Sontag wrote that he loved the rich dessert, thick with pistachio butter and topped with mascarpone cream, that he even got a second order to go. We've also enjoyed the dessert in the past and must say that the floral and aromatic offering is an excellent change of pace from most dessert offerings at barbecue restaurants and trailers around town.
