Watch never-seen-before footage of Charlize Theron's Oscar-winning 'Bombshell' makeup artist turning her into Megyn Kelly (exclusive)

"We did a lot of tests to make sure we were on the right path, so it wasn't like I waited months and then saw myself for the first time," Charlize Theron told Yahoo Entertainment last fall about her uncanny transformation into former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly in Bombshell. "It was quite a process."

Now, in exclusive time-lapse footage from the film's upcoming home entertainment release (watch above), you can see what that process entailed, including how makeup artist Kazu Hiro — who just won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for his work on the film — created a portrait sculpture as reference on set.

"He's an artist in his own right, I can't even think of him as a makeup artist," Theron says in the clip. "He's an artist."

According to Hiro, some of the biggest differences between Theron and Kelly that he had to focus on were the eyelids, nose tip, chin, jaw, eyes … and nostrils.

"Megyn Kelly has bigger nostrils, and Charlize has really tiny nostrils, so we had to mimic that likeness," he explained. Theron, then, wore a 3-D-printed nose plug for the part.

And that, sometimes, is how you make movie magic.

Bombshell arrives on Digital Feb. 25 and on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD March 10.
