Bobby Brown denies history of domestic violence against Whitney Houston: 'The public record is wrong'

On Friday, musical artist Bobby Brown spoke at the Television Critics Association Press Tour for his upcoming biopic, The Bobby Brown Story, which will air on BET. The annual TCA event is held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where his ex-wife Whitney Houston was found unconscious and submerged in a bathtub. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office reported that her death in 2012 was caused by drowning and the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.”

During Brown’s appearance at the TCA press tour, a person allegedly asked the R&B singer what it was like to be on a panel at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Brown reportedly replied that he didn’t feel “creeped out” to be there. He added, “The spirit of my ex-wife is probably still here. … It just feels good to be here and to promote this movie and to be able to smile and to be here with my wife and my kids.”

Lindsay MacDonald, a staff editor at TV Guide, said that the panel came to an abrupt end when questions about domestic violence came up.

Brown denied that there was ever an incident of domestic violence between him and Houston. When a reporter said that such incidents were a matter of public record, Brown replied: “The public record is wrong.”

He added: “What people don’t understand is the stories told about me are untrue — are false. We’re correcting everything the press has believed about me. I’m able to tell my story from what I know, my truth. That’s the basic reason we did this film. We did this film to tell my side of the story. What me and Whitney went through is what we went through.”

In 2003, Brown was charged with battery that stemmed from an altercation with Houston. When Brown went to turn himself in, Houston stood beside him with a bruise on her cheek.

At the time of the incident, Houston’s publicist issued a statement that read, “Bobby Brown is very apologetic about what happened and hopes his wife forgives him.”

In a 20/20 interview with Robin Roberts in 2006, Brown admitted that he hit the singer, but said that he was not a violent person. During the same interview, Brown said that he had a sexual encounter with a ghost.

“I bought this mansion in Georgia … this was a really, really spooky place,” Brown said. “But yes, one time, I woke up, and yeah, a ghost. I was being mounted by a ghost.”
