Bob George, Producer on Drake Doremus Films, Dies at 51

Bob George, who served as a producer on the recent Drake Doremus-directed dramas Newness, Zoe and Endings, Beginnings, has died. He was 51.

George died Tuesday after he was struck by a car while on his bicycle in Silver Lake, writer-actor Ben York Jones told The Hollywood Reporter. “He was very healthy and precautious and conscientious and humble, and he rode his bike everywhere,” Jones said.

Born in Peoria, Illinois, Robert Joseph George Jr. started out as production accountant on such big-budget films as Armageddon (1998), Pearl Harbor (2001), The Sum of All Fears (2002), three Pirates of the Caribbean movies and The Lone Ranger (2013).

He was a production consultant on Divergent (2014) before producing his first feature, Scott Free’s Newness (2017). Starring Nicholas Hoult and Laia Costa and written by Jones, it premiered at Sundance and was acquired by Netflix.

He reunited with Doremus on the Ewan McGregor and Léa Seydoux-starring Zoe (2018), which bowed at Tribeca and was picked up by Amazon, and Endings, Beginnings (2019), a Toronto title that starred Shailene Woodley, Jamie Dornan and Sebastian Stan and was acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films.

George and Jones were at work on another Doremus film, Aurora, from CJ Entertainment, at the time of his death. He also served as a production consultant on the upcoming action thriller Tin Soldier, directed by Brad Furman and starring Jamie Foxx and Robert De Niro.

According to Jones, George was hit by a car immediately after the door of a parked car opened into the bike lane.

Survivors include his spouse, artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz, and his sister, Jennifer.
